Cool Ridley Scott returns with Alien the Prequel

Being old I can remember how significant a film Alien was. In todays saturated space opera media it may not be quite as impressive - but in 1979 it was a truly stunning and groundbreaking movie.

I know that it is not quite new news - but Scott - the original director is making a prequel that he has just announced will be filmed in 3D and at least match the standard set by Cameron with Avatar. He has also promised it will be very nasty!

The great irony is that Scott said that once he had made Alien he could not make a sequel as his work was done. It could not be bettered. The studio hired Cameron to make Aliens as a sequel and really helped Cameron become a successful director.

I can't wait for this to be made - I do hope he meets the standard all us original Alien fanboys will be expecting of him!

Seems like the year for prequels. A prequel to "The Thing" is currently in production over here and a friend of mine is meant to be working on it, so we'll see what they have to say.

wow, I really hope this gets off the ground, if anyone can drag the franchise out of the lowbrow, quick fix, one dimensional mire its in at the moment its ridley scott. its totally lost its way with the AVP series, reducing the alien to a block force has taken all its character away.
Here's hoping for another claustrophobic nightmare tour de force from the master

So it is being made then? I thought it had stalled a while ago.

Fingers crossed both of these don't suck.

On a related subject "Predators" doesn't look too bad either from the trailers.

There seems to be some deeply confused thinking on that site.

A lot of the comments are associating Scott and Cameron. Cameron came into to direct Aliens as Scott wanted nothing to do with it.

I just hope that Scott goes back to his Alien/Bladerunner roots and creates another classic. He is certainly capable of it.

I am just imagining some of the scenes from Alien made in Avatar quality 3D - the thought is mind-boggling!

Good, i am glad to see he is revisiting the Alien theme. I do hope Hans Rudi Geiger is also involved and it gets back to the original Alien look.

I remember seeing the first film in the cinema and being blown away by it. The look and feel where just superb, It felt chillingly real/realistic

Alien, Aliens and the fourth film are brilliant sci-fi films.

Yes, definitely being made. Snow scenes were being filmed in and around a quarry in Georgetown, Ontario (pretty sure that's where it is)

I am hoping it is released in non 3D also, as I think I'd crap my pants watching it in 3 D to be fair.

I have to say I don't go with what seems to be the majority - I thought Aliens was rubbish and totally devalued what Scott achieved in Alien.

The depth of Alien was what didn't happen - genuine suspense like that moment with with water dripping down the cargo hold onto the peak of the baseball cap, drip, drip, drip.

Imagine that scene in 3D with all the acoustic power we now have in cinema. Scary!

Aliens was just Rambo in space. Utter rubbish.

I have to disagree about the fourth, by which I presume you mean 'Alien Resurrection' I thought this was shocking, with a lacklustre cast (Whining Rider ), wooden acting, predictable direction and some dreadful concepts for the alien development. That bloody baby at the end was farcical.

When it was released in the 80's, Aliens was of its time. We were all enjoying Rambo, Rocky, Terminator, Robocop and Predator, and gung-ho *****-out action with tongue-in-cheek humour was in every movie. I loved it then, and still enjoy it now, but it is a wholly different genre of film to the brooding, atmospheric menace of Scott's original.

Many criticise Fincher's 'Alien 3', but I have always enjoyed that. It was more faithful to Scott's work with a limited population facing an unknown menace with little defence, and the dark, dirty and derelict location reminiscent of the bowels of the Nostromo maybe made it too much of a revisiting than a stand-alone movie which advanced the story of Ripley's ongoing battle with her demon nemesis.

With this new film, I really hope Cameron's involvement is limited to technical input on the 3D work, and Scott gets his creative juices flowing to scare us all $h!tle$$, and afterwards that he can force the studios into drawing a line under it to prevent the further b@$tardisation of cinemas most iconic creature.

Is Cameron going to be involved in the Alien Prequel?

As for the line being drawn, it may be sometime out as Alien Prequel #2 is already timetabled for 2013.

I do agree, the directors cut of Aliens is the definitive version, some 30 mins of extra footage well worth watching!
Alien and the 4th film are so close on its heels though!

Definitely √ I saw Aliens on it's day of release, and went another two times. I've owned the original VHS release, the Directors Cut VHS, and now have the Alien Quadrilogy DVD box-set with many versions of all 4 films. I don't regret a penny of what I've spent on these movies over the years as I've derived a great many hours of entertainment from them all, except maybe 'Alien Resurrection'.

I love each and every film for what they are.

Each and every one standing alone as a single film is work of movie art.

I agree that Alien was the best, but only because it was the first film of it's type, and anything, in my opinion, could only come a close second.

I own the full box set with directors cut deleted scenes blah blah, etc. I must say that each directors cut is slightly better than the final cut, if for no other reason than we get to see some more if the shock and gore that was too nasty to be in the final version.

For me I like the 3rd film the best, seeing ripley in constant battle with her nemasis in the prison, as well as seeing her rise from being the fragile mother figure of newt in tge second film, to this bad *** mother who rises above all the men to combat the alien.

Im loving the fact there will be a prequel. One of the first things we question in Alien when they come across the spaceship is 'where did it come from?' so it will be interesting to see the history behind it all.

Why am I not surprised at these preferences!

I guess every film will find it's audience!
