It's probably the iPad 3.2 / iPhone 4.0 JB. He has demoed it and it wasn't the "Spirit" thing that the dev-team have mentioned as far as I'm aware.

For anyone thinking Spirit is a scam, the dev-team blog links to here.

I Jailbroke my phone before the updated firmware was out just to see what the fuss was about (and if I'm honest to try out a few of the apps such as Co-Pilot). Couldn't see that much advantage over the standard phone? It was nice having a different theme etc but that was all I got out of it.
Suffice to say, when I upgraded the firmware I didn't miss the 'jailbrake' freatures at all.
Oh and Co-Pilot worked so well I bought it anyway

The main advantage of JB is to allow you to unlock the phone, and use apps that aren't in the App Store, for example MyWi which allows you to turn your iPhone into a wifi hotspot (serious battery drain though). The problem is that the latest phones cannot be unlocked anyway as they have updated BootROM and also if you have updated your phone to use the latest BootROM you cannot unlock either. Well, that's until OS 4.0 when Apple will do the good thing and make the iPhone globally unlocked

Where are the apps for jailbroken phones online? would jailbreaking it allow you to set your own message tones for example? and what other benifits are there? I paid £450 for this phone so don't want to bugger it up

Rock Your Phone is another site.

When I've a spare moment to think I'll try the upgrade to 3.1.3 and the JB and see how things are.

A tethered jailbreak means you cannot boot (turn on the ipod/iphone) without connecting it to a computer. Untethered means the ipod/iphone jailbreak is independent of computer, and it can boot all by its lonesome self. Spirit jb works flawlessy on the iphone 3gs running 3.1.3 firmware! http://spiritjb.com/

Untethered means if your phone battery dies once charged it will just work as normal, tethered means once your phone battery dies you need to reconect it to your pc and run the software to get it working. If you have a tethered phone its best to never switch the phone off or let it die.

If you're asking that question then best not to do it.

Or you could answer the question instead of presuming that it's too clever for me. I've downloaded all the software but would rather know a bit more about it to see if it would benifit me as there are certain things with the phone that i wish were different.

He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes, he who doesn't ask remains foolish forever.

You will lose the Jailbreak, but can Jailbreak it again using RedSn0w.

I recommend disabling the 'Multitasking Option' when Jailbreaking as my 3G runs incredibly slowly after I've opened a couple of applications (even mail, sms, browser). Unfortunately I haven't found a way of disabling it without re-jailbreaking.

Depends how you upgrade. If you do the normal iTunes upgrade then you will lose the jailbreak / unlock and will need to reapply it.

It's pretty easy Steve, as the switches are all in a plist XML file.

Make sure you have OpenSSH installed on the iPhone, and then using an SCP client (like WinSCP!) open a session (userID: root, password: alpine - ubnless you've been good and changed it, SCP protocol) to the iPhone (get your iPhone on wifi on the same network as the PC you're doing this on).

Then look for the following file:

/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/N82AP.plist

..and simply 'Edit' it (if in WinSCP, right click, Edit)

Scroll down the file a short way and you'll come across various <true/> and <false/> switches - all of which look quite interesting... but amongst them you should find:

<key>multitasking</key>
<true/>

and

<key>homescreen-wallpaper</key>
<true/>

Just change 'em to <false/>, as required, and close, reboot iPhone and job done.

I've turned multitasking off on my 3G for exactly the same reason, it's dog slow with it on and you spend half your life manually closing apps!

Good luck...

DN

Thank you for that. Switched off Multitasking.

(although the hard way with SSH!)

Hi,

I am on 3.1.3 abd the phone is jailbroken..

When i connect to itunes it says update 4.0.1 is available..i am guessing a jailbrake does not work with this firmware yet?

if not how can i apply version 4? where the jail brake does work?

Also what will happen to my apps when i apply the update?

Thanks

Its no problem if you wish to upgrade to the new OS (4.0.1). You can just jailbreak again using www.jailbreakme.com directly from your iphone.

As for your apps just make sure once you have jailbreaked that you go into cydia and install "appSync for OS 4.x" this will then allow all your apps to be synced with itunes.

Peace out
