Thanks Jamie, much appreciated.
Some years ago I flew the attack route on the Mohne Dam at low level just to see what it was like. I did it in daylight in a Canberra which is a manoeuverable aircraft. It was surprising how tight a turn it was to miss the higher ground and to get lined up correctly on the run in.
What really impressed me at the time was that they had to do all that in the dark in a comparatively lumbering aircraft like a Lanc, aim between the twin towers, and get settled at a precise height with those spotlights.
We are talking about very low level here and not to forget the answering fire from the ground defences. Thats why I say what an amazing feat it was and how brave those blokes were as well as their flying ability.
I have visited the dam and the enormous repair which they had to make is still clearly visible. They also have a model of one of the Barnes Wallis bombs placed by the dam.
The Germans were certainly doing a lot of waving when I flew between the twin towers!
