Default Why do birds bathe at this time of the year?

I'm filling my bird baths three or four times a day. Every time I look there are sheps, (starlings) in it, chucking the water all over the place.

Why? They don't do it all summer, or at all in the autumn, when the weather is as warm, or warmer, so why now?

My dad had a theory that birds developed a "hotspot" on their chests at this time of the year to get them to sit on nice cool eggs. Any thoughts?

I had visions of profound conversations of hormonal changes in the spring leading to much needed spring cleaning!

They usually like dust baths in the summer to help get rid off parasites I think. I think the watery bit is to cool down as your father said.
