Bose QuietComfort Headphones
I have to say that's the best £250 I have ever spent. Two 24 hour flights in just over a week, the silence was amazing.

we have QC3s and they're not silent. but they are frakkin awesome for long haul flights. especially if there are screaming babies nearby.

Some friends bought a variety of cheaper headphones, some kind of worked and one set increased the noise

I wouldn't spend that much on headphones as I don't use them enough but the sennheiser ones I got for £50 do a decent job at noise reduction.
