One for Leslie - Vulcan XM655 fast taxi
Vulcan XM655 did a fast taxi run at Wellesbourne, near Stratford-Upon-Avon on Sunday.
I've uploaded a couple of videos, the shorter one is here.
Although the 'fast taxi' was very brief (and we were too far behind the crowd line to actually see the front wheels lift off the floor!) it was worth the drive around the Costwolds to get there and back. The sound of four Olympus engines screaming away was pretty awesome

It was good to see good old XM 655 again, I flew her a few times, on displays mainly, she was one of the better handling Vulcans. They were all a little different.
If you compare the jet exhausts with 558 you will see that 655's are larger in diameter. This indicates the larger 300 series engines which had significantly more thrust. The sound at full poke was different, the 200 series engines had that howl and the 300's had a deeper note which made your insides vibrate. The 300's would quite happily go to the vertical off the runway at the lighter fuel weights.
655 is owned by a bloke who is very proud of here and was hoping to be able to fly her, the way he was talking to me I reckon he has not given up on that yet! She does fast taxy runs every year for demonstrations and is also used for checks training as well for the 558 aircrew.
You may have noticed that the pilot closed the throttles before raising the nose during the run. If he had not done that the aircraft would have got airborne! Getting her in the air would not be popular with the CAA!
655 has been maintained in good condition and in full working order. Thats good to know.

Anyone else, when the Vulcan is ever mentioned in conversation say you know a real Vulcan pilot
Les, it is great to have you on here, love hearing your memories,
"The 300's would quite happily go to the vertical off the runway at the lighter fuel weights."
What that must feel like I can only begin to comprehend,
Bet it makes your ***** tingle

Thanks for the comments.
Les, you certainly know your vulcans! I used to live a few miles from XM655 and my then housemate spent two summers completely repainting it! He's still a member of the 655 Maintenance and Preservation Society and was helping out on Sunday. It's nice to know that you have personal memories of this aircraft.
Although limited to ground running, the airframe of 655 has been kept in good condition. A number of aerolons, the tail rudder and various other panels have been re-skinned in the recent past. The aircraft still has the full electronic suite, and as mentioned, has been used to train the crew for XH558 on a number of occasions.
It's nice to see the aircraft come to life, rather than being sat in the corner of the airfield.

Incidentally a 200 series engined one would also go vertical off the runway but would have to recover at a lower height.
