Default Time for daughters first mobile.

She wants a Samsung Genio.

Any good deals going around? Something like 200mins and unlimited texts for £10 a month would be good.

At what age? i am thinking 10+ for our two although the eldest is very aware of phones and some of her friends have them at 6&7 (iPhone in a couple of instances!) which i feel is just too young and unnecessary.

My kids got their first phone at about 10-11. LG pink cost about 12 quid for the girl and a second hand one off SN for the other. Now one has LG crystal and the eldest a Nokia. All PAYG so no messy contracts.

£10 seems to last about 6 months for them both

At secondary school they are usually required to hand phones in at reception and collect them at the end of the day.............that's the rule for our school but not sure if it's 100% adhered to by the kids LOL

My daughter is ten in July and though I thought it could wait another year it looks like I will have to cave in. Orange do a £10 per month sim only package with 200 mins and unlimited texts. I think payg will be cheaper though so she is going to end up with my old nokia and payg. I think just getting a phone so long as it isn't prehistoric will put a smile on a kid's face.

No, she's a headstrong little girl and she wants the Genio. I'm OK with that.

Just something to bear in mind often (usually moreso than not) unlimited does not mean unlimited, it is based upon a fair useage policy so check the small print as kids use allot of texts and you may be suprised lol

My daughters 3 contract has unlimited texts, basically it is 4000 texts per month & she has exceeded it before, once, then she got told off ;-) but normally she does 3000 per month (not sure how makes my 100 odd look pointless)

Yeah - about 3000 on Virgin.
How anyone can get into this region is beyond my reckoning though.
I imagine you can get a warning sent to you when this is exceeded?

Isn't it reckoned to be more dangerous for children to use a mobile phone after recent research? I gather they are saying that there is an increased chance of brain tumours in later life depending on the amount of daily use because of the microwaves affecting the brain.

I have to say it worries me enough to make me use my phone as little as possible. Maybe its all wrong what they say but they must have a reason for it.

And any bloke who sends more texts than that is clearly a gheyer

The only reason to text is to tell your mate to get down the pub ASAP so you can talk properly. Even the wife is lucky to get one in a week

You surprise me Les, the amount of radar and other nasty RF sh*t on those Vulcans means you should have been well and truly fried years ago

NOPE (and I assume they are all the same), they just keep letting you text until you near the contract credit limit which on my daughters phone was £100 so she got a text at £90, the limit is not £5.

Me neither like I said if I do 100 a month I am amazed lol. She is 15 though so I suppose it's near the norm?

Well we were seated behind and above the direction in which the radar dish antenna was firing off. There was also rf shielding between us and the radiating element.

If they were doing a ground test of the radar there was an exclusion zone to protect anyone from harm.

They were not quite so protective in the early days of the nukes though. They did say it was safe to get close to it while it was standing in the station! I hope so!

Flightman - Get her an iPhone (old one) - Going to big school with a crap phone now is about the same as going to big school in 1982 with a haircut your ma did using a bowl. You can now decide if you want to spent 300 quid to make her socially acceptable, or a tenner to get her 'in' with the chess club and debating society geeks.

p.s. - It is really obvious that my ma cut my hair using a bowl and all my friends played chess??????

FB, a couple of issues with that.

1. I don't have an iPhone.
2. The "cool" phone at school is the Genio. So that's what she's got.

£49 from Carphonewarehouse, £10 for 200 mins + unlimited texts, and free calls to Mum who is also on Virgin.

Job done.

By "£10" do you mean £10 per month = £120 per year ??
