Darwinism in action, but you've got to really feel for the train driver

Sheep effect I guess;

One or two people cross over when its clear...then others follow suit a few seconds later without looking, by which time the train is comming.

Bearing in mind that I'm recalling a school lesson from about 18 years ago, so they were probably talking about 'Intercity' speeds - apparently at those speeds you'd theoretically hear a train about 12 seconds after it hit you, by which time you were dead of course.

Exclamation

Trains do not travel faster than the speed of sound

Maybe you would only hear it 10 seconds before it hit, not giving you time to clear the tracks.

If you were dead you still wouldn't hear it

Most pedestrians during the holiday season do exactly that on the roads in our town! They never look first and often step onto the road with their backs to the traffic. They seem to think they are not only immortal but considerably more important than anyone else! if they notice that you had to stop for them they will consider that it is all your fault!

Gross stupidity!

That accident is a terrible tragedy though.
