Default Clown Fish

Ok chums, I was at a very awesome tropical fish store today and my other half fell in love with 2 Clownfish and I'm now considering getting them for her but I don't know where to start.

I have a 60litre tank, heater and a fluval U2 filter gathering dust at the moment. What do I need to start a suitable habitat for these little fish?

i was going to say that , clown fish equals very expensive
clown loaches -cool little dudes but they can be shy

if its loaches - orange and black with red fins they need places to hide and no other nasties or they will hide all the time, angel fish, red tail sharks etc are fine but no jack dempseys or any ciclids - hard little btards

and make sure the water has the nitrate breaking bacteria already developed.

quick way of doing this is pissing in thetank believe it or not

We had a couple of Loaches and yes they did hide but much of the time they were in the front of the tank, often lying upside down on the gravel playing dead"

My Clown Loaches are the best fish ever. Personality is fantastic, they do play dead and I have often had a heart in mouth moment many times when I've seen one of them lying on the gravel. I used to have 4, but only 2 survived, though these are thriving and one of them is huge. I saw some little baby ones in the fish shop the other day and I was soooo tempted to get more, but tank probably isn't big enough really.

For the cost of a marine tank, I would definitely say no, get a tropical one with a variety of fish and you'll have hours of entertainment.

Ah - I never thought of that But I tell you they really do look as if they had gone to the big net upstairs, very realistic

I am told they like company so get at least two if you get some. I have no idea what tank size they need. Ours didn't seem to grow that much although it was a decent tank size.

I've had mine for 6 years - they do indeed have a brilliant character
although they quite often "play dead"

Jamz - where are you buying from??? Wouldn't recommend buying fish from anywhere but Grosvenor tropicals. Have a chat with Jody, she will keep you right.

If you aren't used to keeping tropical fish I wouldn't go near the clown fish just yet. 60L is around 2ft x 1ft x 15in - too small in my opinion, and the filtration will not be up to the job. I have a 100L tank here that you are welcome to, if you want something bigger.

When finding nemo was released a few years back there was a big rush on sales of clown fish - some unscrupulous dealers were selling them regardless of fish keeping experience, some without advising they were marine fish requiring specialist tank environments.

Fearless Freddie would sit by the tank for hours watching them!

Tarmac Terror - Cheers for the offer but I'm gonna stall the ball, had to spend a few(hundred) quid on the car to keep 'er on the road this month. It was Grosvenor Tropicals that we seen them TT, absolutely beautiful little creatures. They have some very nice kit in there, they had some clownfish in a tank which actually looked smaller than my own 60litre with a fantastic setup of coral but I didn't ask any questions as this was just a scouting mission.

Hopefully will try and get something setup later in the year

Greekpeter - that is magnificant looking, I envy your skillz!
