Ok chums, I was at a very awesome tropical fish store today and my other half fell in love with 2 Clownfish and I'm now considering getting them for her but I don't know where to start.
I have a 60litre tank, heater and a fluval U2 filter gathering dust at the moment. What do I need to start a suitable habitat for these little fish?

There are 28 species of clownfish so you will need to check the size the ones you have seen will grow to and that whether a 60l tank will be enough. Apart from the difficult and time consuming job of preparing the tank so that the water is suitable to take fish you will then need coral and possibly anenomies for the clownfish. Marine tanks are not on the same level as keeping tropical fish and a lot more work is required.
Coral is expensive stuff so apart from checking the species of clownfish check out what anemones you will need and total cost of everything to get your tank up to spec. The last time I looked into it it was going to cost a grand and the tank was only £400 of that!
Have a read of here: http://www.aquariaworld.co.uk/fish_k.../clownfish.htm

i was going to say that , clown fish equals very expensive
clown loaches -cool little dudes but they can be shy
if its loaches - orange and black with red fins they need places to hide and no other nasties or they will hide all the time, angel fish, red tail sharks etc are fine but no jack dempseys or any ciclids - hard little btards
and make sure the water has the nitrate breaking bacteria already developed.
quick way of doing this is pissing in thetank believe it or not

My Clown Loaches are the best fish ever. Personality is fantastic, they do play dead and I have often had a heart in mouth moment many times when I've seen one of them lying on the gravel. I used to have 4, but only 2 survived, though these are thriving and one of them is huge. I saw some little baby ones in the fish shop the other day and I was soooo tempted to get more, but tank probably isn't big enough really.
For the cost of a marine tank, I would definitely say no, get a tropical one with a variety of fish and you'll have hours of entertainment.

Ah - I never thought of that
But I tell you they really do look as if they had gone to the big net upstairs, very realistic ![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I am told they like company so get at least two if you get some. I have no idea what tank size they need. Ours didn't seem to grow that much although it was a decent tank size.

Jamz - where are you buying from??? Wouldn't recommend buying fish from anywhere but Grosvenor tropicals. Have a chat with Jody, she will keep you right.
If you aren't used to keeping tropical fish I wouldn't go near the clown fish just yet. 60L is around 2ft x 1ft x 15in - too small in my opinion, and the filtration will not be up to the job. I have a 100L tank here that you are welcome to, if you want something bigger.
When finding nemo was released a few years back there was a big rush on sales of clown fish - some unscrupulous dealers were selling them regardless of fish keeping experience, some without advising they were marine fish requiring specialist tank environments.

Tarmac Terror - Cheers for the offer but I'm gonna stall the ball, had to spend a few(hundred
) quid on the car to keep 'er on the road this month. It was Grosvenor Tropicals that we seen them TT, absolutely beautiful little creatures. They have some very nice kit in there, they had some clownfish in a tank which actually looked smaller than my own 60litre with a fantastic setup of coral but I didn't ask any questions as this was just a scouting mission.![Lol1](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/lol1.gif)
Hopefully will try and get something setup later in the year![Thumb](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif)
