Default iPhone 4 fault

Now I am a mac fan as many of you know and spent a few hours queuing for the blessed thing yesterday

https://www.scoobynet.com/non-scooby...-tomorrow.html

All good and last night got home to open it and set it all up. Will post on other threads about just how blooming nice it is
But for now, this thread is about the signal issue and what is fast becoming a fault.

Essentially it is down to how you hold it and what happens to the signal strength or bars. Mine is affected big time and it seems I am not alone. First off, it is not a major issue for me per se as I always have mine in a case except when it is in the docking station or in the car. But there will be times when I dont have the case and this is where I see it as a fault.

It is becoming quite well documented so far

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8759590.stm

I love the typical response from Apple though and in particular, Steve Jobs. They simply state, hold it in a different way or get a case
Well when you are right handed, holding it in the left is natural and it is the thing you do the most when starting a call. You hold it in your left, get the contact to call and then hold it to your ear.

Will try and take a video of it later this weekend to illustrate what happens with mine

Lets see if other users on here get the same issue

Seems a shame to have a lovely metal case then have to hide it.

I tried to go back to the iphone after using Android for a few months (Desire has a lovely screen), and I found it really awkward to use. No back button is the most frustrating thing. On the other hand, the quality of the apps in the marketplace is lower than those in the iphone store, by a mile. I think this may change over the next year or so.

It's been noted holding your phone with left hand and thumb at the top doesn't drop the signal.

I did, but she objected to that and instead we tried just video calling each other

I can see that becoming an euphemism

A short update on this issue

It may seem that my phone may not suffer as badly as I thought. It may be something to do with the signal at home (which to be fair is appalling anyway )
I tried it outside in good signal area and in fact after the initial drop in bars, it actually went back up the tighter I held the phone

Will do some more testing this weekend.

Apart from that, the one thing that has absolutely blown me away is the screen.
Wow...just wow !!

You have to put it alongside a 3G or 3GS to really appreciate it, but even then it just looks like light and day.

she spends more time sitting on the face of your phone than on your face

I've heard, and sort of tested myself that the fault is the design of the antenna. At the bottom of the metal casing on the left hand side there is a small rubber seperator, which seperates the antenna part, and the base of the metal casing. If you hold it and your skin connects the two parts then the signal drops rapidly. I find its unusual that you would connect the two parts but of course it is an awkward place for a leftie to a void.

Of course this is theoretical based on my experience and reading a review on engadget.com.

Does anyone else agree on this?

I posted a link on another post here (see 11) with a video of it, Apple has said that people should hold the phone different (fantastic technical advice there ) or buy a case for it (more money making, should come with a case in the first place )

That's what I've read on the net too. I'll have a go with mine later with the case off. But I've been using it all day and typing this message with a grip on the weak spots and i have 4 bars and 3G signal

Yep, and I was told off by Swiss for moaning on about it so you can see why this thread is just a wee bit ironic. Not that I want to reopen hostilities btw

I`d be more concerned about the screen shattering if you drop it, on this test they didn`t drop it from any great height as it was just above waist high. On the 2nd drop the phone went totally dead and wouldn`t power back on, on the 4th drop the screen shattered. This is after it being reported how strong the iphone 4 was supposed to be.

I`d certainly get a quality case if your going to buy one.
