Problems with a Sony DAV S800?
#1
Just bought one of these and it is a multi-region and RCE player. Set it up and tested it at the weekend and have a wierd problem with it.
If I play a region 2 disk everything is fine. If I play a region 1 (normal or RCE) disk it plays great until the screen flashes, like a strobe light or an explosion, and then the picture disappears for a split second and then reappears.
I think I've wired everything up properly but I was just wondering if anyone had seen anything similar to this.
Cheers

I had a similar problem when I bought mine, also multi region. The problem turned out to be the telly in the end. There was a setting to enable NTSC playback, this cured the problem. What tv have you?
Mail me if you need any more info

Rich,
No good, I checked the inputs for the telly and it was set to auto-detect either a PAL or NTSC signal. Even when I overode the auto setting and set it to the correct NTSC format, the picture still cuts in and out when the screen falshes violently.
I watched a film last night on Region 2 with loads of lightning flashes in it and the whole film played perfectly, but tried another Region 1 disk and it messed up straight away.
In case you didn't get the TV info it's a Toshiba 40PW8 rear projection unit.
Cheers

Check you have a fully wired SCART cable. Using RGB via a SCART connection bypasses the PAL/NTSC colour standards
Give us some more details and I'll have a look into it

* Remember to set the player to VCR mode, this will probably need to be enabled on a projection TV
(Macrovision is known to caused problem to Projector TVs. Sympton is picture will become brighter and darker in alternate sequence)

DJ Dunk,
OK the spec is as follows.
DVD - Sony DAVS800 - Multiregion (Don't know what mod chip).
TV - Toshiba 40PW8
The DVD does not have a scart output so I am running the Monitor Out AV lead from the back of the DVD into the correct scart connection socket for a DVD player into the TV. As the DVD does not have a scart out I am using the supplied AV to SCART converter (the same as on the PS2).
I have also tried running the AV lead directly into the front of the TV into the AV input next the S-Video connection, therefore bypassing the need to use the scart converter which I thought might be shagged.
All the above set ups lead to the problem with the screen cutting out, but only on Region 1 disks.
If there's anything I've missed let me know.
Cheers

Have you tried connecting it to a CRT television ? Does it work then ?
Does the player give you the VCR mode option ? Some chips for this player give this macrovision removal mode which can help with problems on projection TV's.

Goning to try connecting it to a CRT TV tonight. As far as I know I can't change it to VCR mode although I'll have a look tonight.
As to whether the mod chip has anything for macrovision, again not sure. If it doesn't work with a CRT TV then I'll just have to send it back and get my money back and go for a different system.

Dave, I bought mine from somewhere called the 'Electro Centre'. I've already scoped a replacement from 'Techtronics' that has a mod chip with a mode to counteract the macrovision problem.
The cack thing about buying off the web though is that I have to pay the shipping to send the one back that I don't want and then wait for the replacement. Ho hum.
