With most airlines you need a passport number - however when I didn't have one and made up a number and then went back to edit the booking.

OK. This for someone who is in process of getting a replacement Passport having lost one. May be use the old number which we have but this will be cancelled as soon as Lost Form received. Hmmm David

Pretty sure you need one. Especially with US and the info gets passed to them.

You don`t need one to BOOK a flight . But you will need one with at least six months validity left and a machine readable one at that to GET IN to the USA. You need to fill in your API and ETSA details well in advance now as part of the visa waiver programme which will require all the passport data . You will find having a biometric passport makes things a lot easier for you going to the USA . However to book a flight all you need is the money to pay for it , actually getting on the flight and travelling requires you personally and not the travel agent to meet all the requirements to fly.

I don't think you need one to book the flight but certainly need one to do the online check in if you are doing it.

Depends on the airline - some require it at booking time.

Thanks guys.

In fact I phoned BA this morning and asked. They said no need at booking time. But James, my boy, is unlikely to be flying BA so will still need to check with chosen airline - whoever is doing the cheapest LA deal (any suggestions?). Thanks for useful comment btw. David
