Travellers
My dad has just been on, he was pleased as the encampment of travellers that had been in the empty place next door have moved on.
Thirty or so Caravans, they broke the gates and fence down to get on the site as it was previously secure, they have been there a month or so, the site is not utterly devastated, litter, human and Dog excrement, the debris from their business endeavours, old shopping trolleys in the stream, empty gas canisters. The fence and gate are ruined as are the drains, the stream is full of rubbish and they reckon there is a ten grand bill to put the site back to how it was, apparently the company that owns the site is liable, ten grand to pay for the damage caused by unwanted visitors.
Now, I am not looking for a thread slagging off travelling people, I am more interested in why they do it and do they wonder why they get met with hostility and suspicion from the general public based on instances like this, do they all behave like this or is it just certain groups, do other groups despair of this kind of thing ?
There are loads of words and phrases used to describe travellers, what are the differences, can you tell them apart, are some better to have turn up on your field or are they all liable to leave it looking like the council tip ?
Gypsies
Gyppos
Tinkers
Travellers
Pikeys
Romanies
I realise some of these are pejorative terms but what are the differences, what do they actually mean ?

When I worked in Newry and Londonderry I truly realised how bad Pikey cunts are. Luckily where i live there isn't nor ever has been any and they don't seem as common in Belfast anymore since the Polish moved in.

They cannot use force to gain access to land - if they do they can be moved off immediately.
I did wonder why they stank so much ... someone said, "So blind people can hate them as well"!!
Not sure how true that is, but sounds reasonable?

Don't be so mean! They can't help it.It's their culture.
They have been persecuted for centuries like black people.
Funny thing is,I am not worried about gangs of Jewish kids.

Having worked for the police before Jacko, I'd have expected you to add "TGB" to your list.
Thieving Gypsy *******s for those who can't work it out.
Of course, having sat through endless hours of diversity lessons, I wouldn't use that acronym.....

We were laughing at work about Travellers.
The MD has sold his camper van for a towing caravan. He has not got himself a good towing car yet, so has been using the company pick up.
He said he can't get into any sites as they all think he is a Traveller
It seems, they are a group of people, that nearly everyone dislikes.

Yup - councils and police treat them with kid gloves and they will not prosecute them because it is too much hassle and work for them.
and to add to PSL's comments - as for them breaking in - you have to have proof/witnesses/cctv otherwise the pikey-scum just claim "it was like that when they arrived" and it is up to you to prove otherwise.
Like most of the trouble makers in this country they have not and do not have any intention of integrating into society happy to get whatever they can out of the system but will not obey the rules and see Jo public as someone to despise and take advantage of as they see fit and not made better by the Police and authorities turning a blind eye!

The only good thing I will say about the gypos is they look after their own. We had one who actually worked semi legit and you could leave your wallet on the table and it would still be there after your shift. Sure he sold dodgy baccy, used red diesel, sold fake designer gear and perfume, sold fake whisky which would put people in a coma. But he would never nick (directly anyway) anything from his work mates.

We used to have some Didicoys living a short distance away when I was a child. As far as I know they were not troublesome but you could smell the camp as you walked down the road.
The problem with them now is that they feel they have the right of break in onto anyone's land and marmelise it with mess and destruction and then move on to do the same somewhere else. Nothing is safe in the area either.
Why should they be supported in this kind of behaviour. Society should not have to put up with it.

I always remember an interview they did on the local news with some tinkers who had invaded a cricket pitch. The mother was defending the tinkers actions saying they were being persecuted, whilst her two sons were tearing up the cricket pitch with their quad bikes in the background.

Gypsies:
Gyppos:
The same thing, general term for the White van and white
caravan brigade living in the old ASDA car park.
Tinkers:
An old man on a bike who comes around sharpening knives and
doing small repairs. Very rare these days.
Travellers:
A younger community, usually live in buses, horse boxes or
converted vehicles. Some times protesters, activists
or antidisestablishment.
Pikeys:
Working Gyppos/Gypsies, tarmacing your drive, scrap collecting,
selling dodgy gear, cleaning old ladies guttering.
Romanies:
A romantic vision of the perfect ideal. Horse and caravan,
respectful of their surroundings. Again, very rare today.

So when the caravans arrive the site is unsecured and no force necessary.
