Saw him on TV realising he got it wrong. He'd had a Madonna moment overcome by events. So benefit of the doubt to him.
If he had sponsored an orphan that might have been different. dl

If you rationalise it though, it does, sort of, make sense.
The child would have grown up in wealth, so education, well being and health, covered. The Mother was also financially awarded, a moot point, the greater point being she did not incur the financial uptake of that child, the possible chance that it could of been very poor, for the child.
Difficult one to humanise, in our sense of the word.

I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.
He was in a very emotionally charged situation and he said something which in hindsight comes across "well dodgy!!!" so to quote those "respec innit peoples"...........
Everyone is wading into the argument with an opinion but I don't see many of them opening their cheque books to help..........

Just saying.
We're not all perfect.

He's brother may be a child abuser, I don't know.
On top of that he degraded and shamed the parents with an offer of a paltry sum. Why even make the offer of money? It's all about the childs' welfare right???

I hardly think it was some sort of self-aggrandising moment because he had a camera on him.
Perhaps he just couldn't bare to walk away from the child.

The guy is in a position where he doesn't need to randomly buy a child - he could quite easily buy one anywhere around the world - even the UK. I think he just got carried away. It would be very hard to hand a baby back into poverty.
Or was it all down to misguided western-ised guilt?

You would not offer to 'buy' an orphan but rather offer to adopt
The latter methinks.............and I am continually baffled as to why there is such insistence among 'celebrities' to adopt foreign children when there are so many children in this country that need parents, a loving home and a stable upbringing
Not really. He says his brother is desperate for a child - maybe they can't have children? He sees it as helping his brother and, more than likely, helping the child.

Funnily enough I was stood next to Anna Ryder-Richardson in Tenby a few weeks back (she bought one of the local animal park places) and on her Wikki page it quotes
She has stated she wants to adopt a Chinese baby and that people should do this rather than get pets or buy Ferraris.

Semantics
Mr Caan could just offer the money to the orphanage or to the folk currently caring for the child. Same difference.
My point being that it is wrong to take the kid away from its parents (as they nearly did in Haiti) but to take a child away if he/she has no relatives then that is a different ball game.

I disagree with most on here, if I had got caught up in the moment I would have been spouting about donations, school, shelters, food programs not my brother wants to buy a baby.
It wasnt like it was an emotional burst from him about 'I could provide a home for this child' it was a cold business deal, buy for my brother and here's the price you lucky people......
Really bad if you ask me and I trust the BBC will review his position on the next Dragons Den.

For goodness sake - can't you guys ever take things at face value FFS. Here was a guy obviously caught up in the emotion of the moment who made a suggestion that he very soon retracted when he took a moment to think it through. Sure the guy's whole life is money and doing deals but I really think this was the last thing on his mind at the time. dl
