Acid Reflux ?
Ok .. asked before on here about the chest discomfort ..
Heres my symptoms .
Started off as attacks after eating, really nasty discomfort in the centre of my chest across to my shoulder .. slight relief throwing up ..
Constant burping
Discomfort in the centre of my chest
Worse after eating, really bad the more I eat ..
Exercise seems to make it worse ..
Feeling in my throat .. like something is covering it (shut up)
Zantac appears to have reduced the discomfort ..
thoughts ?

I have been the docs .. twice .. took a stool sample and going back on Friday .. but I hold little faith in them ..
As for eating, I have IBS has my diet is restricted .. I basically eat Fish, Chicken, Potato and veg each night .. although the more I eat the worse I feel .. which matches ..

Possibly stomach ulcer - go to the docs. I've had these and a very low fat diet with no coffee etc helps, as did zantac, but the medicine that stopped it stone dead was Losec. I was given a two week course (1 tablet a day) and it stopped after the second tablet.

Do you have fluid acid type burps which then burns the hell out of your esophagus?
I had tests for H Pyorli bacteria which I think is an indication of an ulcer.
If all your tests are fine then you'll probably have a endoscopy (which isn't a great experience) which may reveal a hiatal hernia - the opening at the top of the stomach doesn't close properly.
I take 15mg Lansoprazole and it goes away completely. If you go to the docs they'll probably prescribe that as a first course of action and I'll put a £5 on it going away within a day or two.

I have exacting the same mate, turns out i have a Hiatas Hernia (aswell as IBS)
Have you had the experience of waking up in the night choking on a mouthfull of stomach acid. That's something to look forward to.
There are tablets you can get from the doctors that help.

I had the same problem. Got to a stage where it was too painful to sit on a motor bike where you lean forwards a bit.
I was sent off to have an endoscopy as a proper check and it was confirmed as reflux.
I take "Omezaprole" pills on prescription which are instantly effective. They slow down the production of stomach acid. Takes about 5-10 minutes to do the business. No side effects.
After a longish time of using them the reflux seems to have gone away anyway.
Worth getting it fixed because the stomach acid is injurious to the oesophagus which is not designed to resist it.

I think they may have gone generic now (i.e. cheaper copies can be made of the original patent protected Losec) - hence the use of the scientific name (omez etc) try your local boots. If not, get your Gp to prescribe, but really you should go see a doc first.
Forgot to comment re IBS - won't be this IMHO as I've had that as well. That manifests itself as feeling like you've got the squitters all the time - stomach cramps, general gassiness, etc i.e. at the other end...
Had most things so far after quite a long time in the more "exciting" parts of Africa and Middle East, etc

Reflux can be a total nightmare, I have had lots of problems with it this year.
I often get pains in my arms and a crushing pain in my chest with it.
I actually ended up in A&E for an ECG earlier this year thinking I was having a heart attack. I've had lots of tests done to make sure it wasn't my heart and to diagnose the reflux. I have been offered surgery for it but I'm leaving it for a while to see if lifestyle changes help at all.
Cutting out beer seems to make a difference

Get to the docs and get some Omeprezole tabs which you take once a day and it will not bother you again if you continue taking .Acid in throat is dangerous as stated so not good to allow this to continue .
Get to the Docs .

Was struck down by the same thing this time last year and got hit with swine flu at the same time - still if it doesn't kill you it makes you stranger!!!
Was diagnosed quickly as stomach ulcers, confirmed with blood tests for Helicobacter Pylori. Fed two antibiotics to kill the bacteria, and lansoprazole pills to reduce stomach acid. Was advised to remain on these indefinitely, but stopped them after 3 months and have been well since.
Don't worry about the endoscopy (scope test) if it is recommended. Would advise you not to go for sedation - GP advised the scope was easier swallowed this way, think she was right. If you suffer from white coat syndrome, there might be other considerations.
For the stomach acid choking thing at night (quite alarming the first time it happens) I was advised to elevate the head end of my bed. Seemed to do the trick.
As has been said already, seek medical advice, acid erosion of the oesophagus can have quite serious consequences.

Quite probably stress related in this case as you mention.
Hiatus hernia is a separate issue - you can have one of these (yes I have one as well ) but without excessive acid, it will cause very little problems. It's when you have excessive acid production in your stomach that you can have more of an issue and the discomfort is then made worse by having a lax oeosphageal spincter (H hernia) allowing acid back up into your throat.
Sounds like you're eating well - although fish can set me off- so don't eat late, lift the head of your bead ( a brick under each leg at the head end), don't drink milk, coffee or alcohol and it should subside, but the best way is to go to your quack tell him you think you have an ulcer and get him to book you a test and look at getting some losec
Your GP testing stools is at the wrong end - hence my comment about it not being IBS related- the H pylori bacteria test is a quick one and it is almost certainly this that is causin your problem. Losec is a proton pump inhibitor - it turns off the excess acid production that can be caused by a h pylori infection which is itself treated with an antibiotic like amoxicillin or whatever.
Aside from the acid reflux the pain caused by this can feel very like a heart attack as one of the posters above mentions - this is because the vagus nerve, which is the one that gets involved in heart attack symptoms (chest pains, arms pains) also gets involved here, but a quick ecg test can rule out heart issues.
If it is the ulcer it can be fixed really quickly so head back to the docs and tell hinm to shine his light in the other end
Best of luck

I did take ompeprazole for very similar symptoms and it worked a treat good for many stomach problems apparently with little in the way of side effects. It worked very quickly which was nice.
I am now on lansoprazole which is very similar apparently
