Question Metric Martyrs .....

Half-wits or wise standard bearers?

I think they just can't move on ...... I'm an old duffer and understand lbs and ounzes much better than kg - but, come on, enough is enough!

Lets see;

Speed in miles per hour,

Drinks in pints,

Height in Feet and inches,

Weight in stones and pounds

and no doubt others too.

Kinda makes us all halfwits or wise standard bearers?

Point taken ..... why do we threaten to prosecute the market trader who sells his nuts in lbs then - if we still use MPH and drink pints?

Mad ...........

It's easy really. 1lb is 454 grams, a Pint is 568ml and 40 thou is 1mm. I was brought up on mainly metric but a little imperial too.

They've been saying that for years Pete,

Why we make such a big issue out of something so minor is beyond me.

Does it hurt anybody if shops want to sell a lb of flour or a quarter of sweets

Its the usual thing, Brussels dictates and we enforce with zealous abandon,

whilst the rest of the EU goes hey ho lets get on with doing nothing.

Last i heard they'd agreed to let us do our own thing, and no further

prosecutions were going to happen, and local councils were informed

Should be apostrophe martyrs not metric martyrs. Tomatoe's, sausage's, spud's, sprout's (sic) etc per lb/kg does me in!

I always ask for a quarter of whatever rather than so many grammes out of principle.

I work with mostly American systems as well which are all still imperial.

Use both when doing all kinds of measurements, can't say it bothers me what ones I use. Obviously cutting wood and stuff to precise sizes is mainly done in mm.

9 inches is a size that I'm pretty familiar with.

Cracks me up when French friends mock our use of feet and inches.

Then I ask them what size wheels are on their cars? And their mountain bikes?

my mate said he had no idea, but it was 147 yards and he had a calculator on his phone if he wanted to use it

Dave - can remember counting out his pocket money in £s, shillings and pence!
Keep both, everyone should be happy, or a conversion chart as you say would seem like a good idea.... but wait.

The main area for measurement problems in the shop I work in is the curtain poles/blinds. Even though there are I think, not one but three conversion charts in a fairly small aisle. And not to mention the fact alot of the stock still has both sizes on (metric and imperial). Now you either have people unable to see what is in front of their face, but the best one is when someone gets ratty because 'things have changed' you show them the imperial size in order to help, only for them to say they don't understand that as it just shows the inches and they want so many feet and so many inches or vice versa. So the education system must have been **** poor for quite some time. (you do have the same problem with metric too, as most people don't seem to realise there are 100cm in a metre)

I work in both a little, but get by ok. I'm not great at converting between the two, but I do understand both seperately, unlike some morons I come across.

If Yerp had its way we wouldn't even be able to buy our eggs by the dozen (never mind feet and inches)...

EU to ban selling eggs by the dozen: Shopkeepers' fury as they are told all food must be weighed and sold by the kilo

Oh, and if you buy sheet material in France, it's 2440mm x 1220 mm.......or 8' x 4' in another form.

I get the impression that those insisting on using foreign measurements, especially on the box are purely trying to show us how clever they are. I have got into the habit of returning the dimension in imperial units just for the hell of it.

Typical Irish way of doing things. Absolutely bloody ridiculous, totally retarded infact. Completely, monumentally, c*untingly...
