Prisoners to get the vote for the first time
Prisoners to get the vote for the first time
Prisoners will be given the vote in general elections for the first time in 140 years after David Cameron conceded there was nothing he could do to halt a European court ruling demanding the change, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

More EU madness forcing the Government to let convicted criminals vote.
This makes my blood boil:
Last year, Peter Chester, who raped and murdered his niece, launched a legal challenge claiming his human rights were being breached by the refusal to allow him to vote.
The case was thrown out but Chester’s appeal will be heard tomorrow and that is when the Government will make its statement. Its lawyers will acknowledge that Britain is in breach of the European court’s judgment and a legal amendment is needed.

Your post leaves me to believe that you think your vote is important.
Personally I don't bother to vote and so am not bothered if some one in prison does either.
Just make sure the prisons are not in marginal seats is perhaps the solution to this "problem".

Me to, voted once in last 10 years.... so if some ****** in prison wants a go then fine, and you could think that by allowing them to vote they're actually showing interest in this country and how it's run, rather than playing cards and bumming each other all day.

Yet another ruling enforced on us by Europe under the ECHR!
Failure to allow the scumbags (in most cases) to vote will open the floodgates for compensation claims for the poor prisoners.
Unfecking believable - we have little or no say in this and yet it is our country!
I thought and hope the conservatives would do something about Europe and their strangle hold and ability to meddle in this country but No a complete loss of spine and U-turn on promises http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/...-EU-referendum

Eu again, about time we were given a vote as to whether we should be in it or out of it.
We were (those old enough) given a vote about joining a thing called the Common Market, which was just a free trade thing. Not the octopus we have now,

Couldn't agree more, after all what about the human rights of Peter Chester's niece, that basic priviledge called life itself. The problem is we lock these people up and they have too much time on their hands to plot and scheme - some hard labour is required to fill their idle hands and minds.

We seem to be full of folks who just want to suck up to everyone and ignore the true wishes of the public

No. But they're all there because they have done something wrong. Something that society as a whole deems is not in society's interests (whether you agree with all laws is not relevant to this discussion) and society is punishing them. Why should they get to involve themselves in society until their punishment is complete?

So do you believe that those that have been to prison, done their time and have subsequently been released, should have the right to vote returned to them or removed for good?

I couldn't care less if they vote or not but I expect that would be impossible anyway as they would nick all the pencils
BUT I don't like being told by the EC what we can do with our prisoners.

If they have been convicted and sent to prison then they are also guilty of violating the rules of our society.
I dont agree therefore that they should be allowed to vote how they want our society to be run. Break the rules and you should lose your rights until you have paid for your crime.
Will we never find a politician who is strong and honest enough to stand up to Europe and who will give us the promised referendum which has been bypassed by both parties?
Our politicians should wear a mantle of shame.

They know that there is a very good chance that a referendum would go against the EC and they imagine that would leave us in a real mess. I don't happen to agree with this as long as we keep trade doors open and keep out of the Euro.
But there is the natural British xenophobism to take into account

Les, That is because all politicians think the British electorate are, in their view, stupid. They may even be right?

The politicians have their own agenda with regard to Europe and I now believe it is tied in with their personal ambitions.
I think we should change our ties with Europe to a trading agreement only as we voted for all those years ago and without realising we were being conned at the time.
Time we went back to running our own country as we want and also that we found a politiciam who will stand up for our country and the people.
I feel that we are being betrayed now and that was the same of course with the last lot of Plonkers.

Cameron was asked about this in PMQ today and ... blamed Labour.
In fact he blamed Labour for just aout anything and everything.
Sad thing is PMQ is a joke as once he gives a ludicrous answer that has little relevance to the question the speaker just moves on to the next cretinous questioner who gets another answer that has little relevance to the question and so on.
The opposition are oathetic, weaker than even the Tories were in 1997 and just watch George Osborne grinning like a paedophile in playground whenever Cameron speaks.
It's all rather pathetic!

Oh yeah that shower called the Labour party
Sometimes you've just got to swallow it and admit they are to blame for certain issues.
