Automated sales calls on Sky-Talk Landline
We recently moved to our new house and obviously had a telephone line installed, mainly for broadband.
From the moment the line was actived, we have had automated sales calls everyday. It is a recording offering to help with debt, credit cards, will services etc. 'Just press 5 if you think we can help.'
The numbers include the following:
08432764004
08432764013
08452707363
08432764010
08432764011
08432764014
There has also been the odd 'international' and 'withheld' calls.
I estimate that in the space of a month we have had over one hundred calls. They seem most common during the day, but we do get one or two during the evening.
I have just spoken to Sky who recommended that I to join the 'Call Preference Scheme', which I have since discovered costs £40 a year! And to top that, they offered a 'last call barring' service........but there is a fee!
They also say that we are already ex-directory as I had originally requested.
We know it is not us that has given the number out to anyone that we shouldn't. This is becasue Sky got our number wrong when they first activated it, so if we had given it out, it would have been wrong anyway!
So, the only explanation is that either BT or Sky have sold our number, which, without our consent, is surely illegal?
Is anyone else having similar problems?

Hmm thats an odd one, I just put my phone number into that TPS website and got.
The following number(s) is/are already registered with the TPS.
Funny thing is it wasnt me as the first time I ever heard of TPS was five minutes ago, So who could have done it for me then?

I assume you had a *recycled* phone number? That is, someone else had it previously and, unfortunately for you, it seems they were a business or something. We had the same at our last place. The number we have now is obviously not recycled from a business. Any chance of changing your number as you haven't been there too long?

Set up a premium rate number and have your phone line re-direct to it at £1 a minute.
Tell friends to let the phone ring twice, hang up then call back so they don't get hit by the "4" ring divert?
OR
Telephone Preference Service (TPS)

The re direct sounds like a great idea, except you'd get charged as you become responsible for the call!
I too had a brand new number when I moved into a new build house and also get these calls - a lot. We're XD, have never given the number out, don't use it for anything (only reason we have a line is for broadband, all calls are done on our mobiles), and are registered with the TPS, but still they come.
Someone mentioned something about auto diallers that dial randomly, which i think are sadly legal, but that surely couldn't explain all of the calls?
I've just stopped answering the phone. There's no point waiting for them to connect and asking where they got your number from as they just hang up. *******.
