It's a "TV" license - not a BBC license

BBC to start broadcasting The Muslim Channel very shortly - that'll give you something to really get your teeth into...

It does indeed, but as I've already clarified it's a TV license and not a BBC one - you seem unable to grasp that most basic of facts.

....and it's actually rather good value for money:

Source: Broadcasting Fee Association. All licences run for a calendar year except the UK (1 April to 31 March). Euro exchange rate £1=€1.14 (at 1 January 2010). Cost is total per licence to domestic customer for TV and radio. *includes VAT

It's also worth noting that:

Everyone in the UK who watches or records TV as it is broadcast needs to be covered by a TV licence. This includes TV on computers, mobile phones, DVD/video recorders and other devices.

I think it is brilliant that the government extorts money from us to fund this patronising information service.
It is like eating a **** sandwich while you are being told how good it tastes.

If it walks like a Cat and looks like a Cat it's a Cat.

Most countries in Europe pay a licence fee in some shape or form.

I don't mind paying it, the quality of our TV seems to be very good. I do think that the licence fee is indirectly responsible for that.

I am guessing that when he says it is a license fee for the BBC, he means it is a license fee for the funding of the BBC.
Even I can "get" this, as I suspect you may.
I can see the semantic difference you wish point out. It is indeed refreshing to see someone on here promoting the official HMG line.

The question should be why is the TV license fee funding the BBC (in all its guises). It's all down to this public service charter (Wikipedia 2010):

The current Charter came into effect on 1 January 2007 and runs until 31 December 2016. The Royal Charter is reviewed every 10 years.
The 2007 Charter specifies that the mission of the Corporation is to "inform, educate and entertain". It states that the Corporation exists to serve the public interest and to promote its public purposes:
  • Sustaining citizenship and civil society;
  • Promoting education and learning;
  • Stimulating creativity and cultural excellence;
  • Representing the UK, its nations, regions and communities;
  • Bringing the UK to the world and the world to the UK;
  • Helping to deliver to the public the benefit of emerging communications technologies and services, and taking a leading role in the switchover to digital television.
This Charter also created the largest change in the governance of the Corporation since its inception. It abolished the sometimes controversial governing body, the Board of Governors, and replaced it with the BBC Trust and a formalised Executive Board.

... and that is why we, as a nation, pay £3.5 Billion pounds a year.

Apparently according to another forum i was reading yesterday, you don't have to pay the licence if you don't watch TV, but you are allowed to watch I-Player as long as you don't watch any live content.

Catchup stuff is supposed to be "free"
