Be careful of what you wish....

Last year had a few days of fun in the snow and ice, took delight in giving the misses a detour around the industrial estate on the way home, then one day someone put a fence in the way and even worse decided to hold it up with concrete posts ....... you can guess the rest....... be careful out there!

or just be a better driver than me.

If this is your first time then beware, you will pull away on snow faster than most cars can in the dry but you will not stop ever.....

On wide rims with summer tyres, it'll be only marginally better than most other stuff. Be prepared to be overtaken by Ford Ka's on bike tyres

Oh, and the ABS sucks on ice and snow. Better to pull the fuse

I spoke to Audi about fitting a set of 16" wheels and winter tyres - £2000 for the set. (presently got 235/40/18 on the A4 at the moment)

UK allocation of winter tyres has pretty much gone. Best better is to order from Germany - they are cheaper also..

I'll be walking or using the tram if it's lot's of snow.

No point shelling out silly money for winter tyres or otherwise risking my NCB.

Chances are this will be a mild winter anyway now everyone is geared up for Artic weather.

A scrappers will sell you 16" steelies in VAG fitment (mine were Golf Mk4 to fit a Fabia vRS 5x100 stud (can't recall bore, offset or hub dia)) for about £20 each. Any old trims from eBay for £4 each or so. I use them for driving instruction, keeping the alloys pristine for me to use, and for resale later.

Agreed with that assessment... and the tyre recommendation looks good, so I'm going to wander off and see what is available.

My Golf is a hoot in the snow - more predictable than the scoob too.

Well, it is with the stability control turned off at least - its scary with it turned on if I get into a big slide. Admittedly, it does work, but its just too slow and doesn't allow the driver to use any engine power to correct the slide and direct the car to where I want it to go.

I may consider getting the smallest and most narrow steel rims that'll fit it and stick some snow tyres on for a laugh (beauty of VAGs is I can easily reprogram the speedometer for various tyres sizes) although even with normal narrow summer tyres it will grip far better than the current wide/ultra low proile tyres that are on at the moment.

Someone at work ordered in a set of Vredestein Snowtrac 3s - very knobbly with lots of sipe cuts to allow the tread blocks to flex, looks ideal for the job, although on a dry/wet road I doubt they'd last too long.

They also do a winter+summer tyre (Quatrac 3 ) , which looks like an interesting compromise to use in colder months without going for a full-on winter tyre.

Seriously, check out the Nokian WRG2's.....

Did some really thorough research prior to putting these on the forester and they have been incredible so far

Mytyres still have them in stock and are well priced

Got to kind of echo this - my GTI is sh1te in the snow. It actually stopped my progress to work last year. Stupid wide tyres and a feather-touch throttle didn't help. Lauching off hill starts was a joke.

Still, should be a laugh.

Traction control cuts the fueling/ignition (effectively, your engine wont rev properly ) when it detects even the tiniest amount of wheelspin, so when it snows the slightest wheelspin ( even at very low revs) stops your car DEAD, you then mistakingly rev the **** off your car thinking you are about to stall, making the situation worse.
Switching T/C off will allow you to rev the engine WITHOUT the T/C kicking in, even when your wheels spin ( depending how much you press the loud switch (throttle)),the engine will not cut out. This does'nt mean you can drive like a ****,so be carefull.
