In your local B&Q store, in fact!
They have huge adverts showing BOGOF on Christmas decorations, but when you get to the till, expect a surprise, since in tiny print, it also says, "cheapest item free" so you end up only saving around half what you thought you would.
Yes, folks, it's a scam. I suggest you shop elsewhere this year.

So were yo expecting to get the most expensive item free?
For instance buy a ball for the tree... £1.50
... and then get the giant santa for the roof £60.00 free?

If there are various items all in the BOGOF offer it is always the cheapest one that is free.
As above if you want to make sure the most expensive things are free you need to purchase them seperately in pairs.

I agree with Alcazar on this and was going to use the supermarket example. BOGOF is exactly that, you get the 2nd item if you buy 2 of the same thing free.
The times when it has been buy 2 items get cheapest free has always been marked up clearly as that when i've seen it.

Years ago though, it used to be every 3rd item they scanned was free (in the 3 for 2 range) and not automatically the cheapest items, so you could always work it to your advantage that way and make them scan things in the order you want.
Now its the cheapest items free, regardless of what order.

BOGOF are normally tricks, the items are made very expensive for a month so they can claim BOGOF and in fact it is a realistic price not a discount but you are now buying twice as much of the product

Last year a mate of mine was waiting at the checkout at. I think it was IKEA, who had the same offer. The guy in front of him was having a go at the chap on the till for the same reason in your OP.
When the customer moved away my mate put 2 identical items on the belt then stopped. The checkout dude charged him for one item with one free.
My mate then did the same for his entire trolley. He was there ages but saved a fortune.
When he walked away from the till the bloke behind him did exactly the same.
To be honest Alcazar if anywhere tried that on me i'd have just walked away.

We'd got outside when I queried the amount the Mrs had paid, it seemed ott, and it was, but not under their terms.
she went back in and complained, got nowhere.
TBH, it's not the first time I've caught B&Q out with sharp practises, I won't buy from them myself.

It says "Buy one get one free" and has the "lowest priced item free" in tiny letters.
But the BOGOF is marked on the bin for EACH item, so it LOOKS like each one you buy you get one of those free.
Not doing owt wrong by the letter of the law, no, but sharp practise, nonetheless.
