The BBC R4 late night news reporter on this was John *****........

And on this morning's news the Vatican were reported as saying that the pope was speaking from experience in these matters?

It is quite a climbdown alright. The original teaching was that contraception was wrong because sex was primarily for producing children and therefore it would be morally wrong to prevent a child from being conceived. Some would say it was really to extend the population of the Catholic religion.

These days in general sex is regarded more for pure enjoyment and becoming pregnant is by no means the major ambition behind it except for when a couple really do want to have a child.

It is obvious of course that wide sexual experience carries the danger of catching disease unless precautions are taken. The Catholic Church's answer was that wide sexual experience was morally wrong except between a married couple and they had to accept the risk of pregnancy.

When it comes to homosexual activity, the risks are obvious as well as the necessary precautions. The Catholic Church did not of course accept that homosexual activity was acceptable in its teachings. In order to forstall the obvious comments, paedophilea was of course completely against the Church's teachings regardless of the offences by priests who were acting disgracefully and against the teachings of the religion.

By accepting the possibility that the use of condoms could be acceptable in certain cases. whatever they might be and which is an amazing relaxation, the Pope is going against the basic teachings of the Church which seems to be a pretty dangerous step to take from his point of view. He may well experience a pretty strong backlash and could destabilise the religion.

Isn't it more accurate to say that the Catholic Church's position used to be that all sexual activity which wasn't for the express purpose of procreation was forbidden, even between a legally married couple?

Leaving tribes and gays to one side, I somehow don't think nowadays that sex is just to reproduce.

Would you want a baby as a result of every bit of nookie you had? If heaven forbid that would happen.

I'm not 100% sure of your point, but there are alot of people out there that don't want children (for a variety of reasons), does that then mean they shouldn't be able to have sex (i.e. have it but use contraception)?
