Well - Okay, it was a few times he was at the same parties - he wasn't exactly a bum chum.

Paul Heaton. Total legend

Loved the Housemartins and equally loved the Beautiful south. Bet he was a laugh to go drinking with

You may well know my uncle Mike Wilson then, he used to paly with them occasionally and certainly used to drink with them a lot. I used to get a load of freebies from the band and back stage tickets to the gigs via my uncle.

I shared a stage with him. Then flanned him with a plate full of shaving foam.

(no, really... they were playing in the Hull Uni Students Union main bar in Rag Week, and EVERYONE paid for him to get flanned. I got the honour of carrying out the act

Actually, the sod ducked and the flan ended up face down on the drum kit... so to thunderous applause I held his head and bloody covered him)

Oh, and Spiders seemed to be the place to (literally) bump into them

Hi Kev. I may well have met Mike but memory is fogged by beers / hash / shrooms etc that was de-rigeur in the day. I just enjoy knowing that I was there.

Ask your uncle Mike if he remembers Peter Ludden of the "Tractors". AKA LUDO

Last time i seen him and enjoyed a few beers we were in the Southern Hotel in Chorlton when he did a gig earlier in the year...

I was smashed, very smashed in fact.......... I have a few pictures somewhere..

I was... for a year. I spent WAY too much time getting p*ssed and enjoying myself, so I blew it. It would be back in... Ohhhh 1984. God. I'm old.

I was living at The Lawns while I was there, although I seemed to spend more of my time at Thwaite than anywhere else.

Went to Stafford and got my degree from there instead. I was slightly more mature and wiser by that point

Remember them well. They released an album when I was at uni 96 - 00. Went down a storm listening to it at 3am after finishing working in the bar.

Don't worry, its the clean version.

Trendy shoite

I was a Spiders lurker I went back to Hull loads after - a mate from Stafford Poly came from Withernsea so we used to go back at weekends and watch Hull City play (Boothferry Park days). Plus I've kept in touch with a few guys (one of whom has just got back from the States after doing the sound for Gary Numan's tour)

Oh yeah - Paul Heaton memory - we were selling Hull City Fanzines outside of the Adelphi when Paul came out and accused my mate of being a facist just 'cos he happened to be using a Union Jack plastic bag to hold them in.

My mate, after careful deliberation, told him to "F*ck Off"

great band always liked them but never saw them livei had a chance at the v festival in 2006 but was hammered and missed it lol, they have split up now found this .After a band meeting on 30 January 2007, they decided to split. They released a statement on 31 January 2007, in which they joked their reasons for splitting were "musical similarities" - an ironic reference to "musical differences" which are often cited as the reason for a band's split. "The band would like to thank everyone for their 19 wonderful years in music," the statement also said.

Paul Heaton is still playing as a solo act, and very good he is too. Dave Hemingway and Alison Wheeler (plus some of the original Beautiful South) are still playing as "The South".
