Default Vegetarians for Christmas?

We are having a vegetarian couple for Christmas dinner, (cheaper than a turkey, I know), and would like some idea from anyone who is also a veggie as to what they eat for gravy?

I use Bisto granules made from veg water and meat juices, but wifey says that that isn't acceptable.

It depends if they are vegetarians for ethical reasons, or just don't like the taste / texture of meat. If the later, you should be fine with the meat juice gravy (I always have been)

Bisto granules + veg water will be ok for the former... Just take some out of the pan before you add in the meat juices for everyone else.

Green Oxo is good stuff, just use that and the normal veg water for a basic gravy. I personally have this... concoction which involves:

Green Oxo
Knorr Touch of taste
Geo Watkins Mushroom ketchup
tom puree
soy sauce
pepper
brown sauce
marmite
bit of garlic
onion powder

use veg water (preferably one which has been reused for each of the veg)

Cornflour to thicken

Bloody lovely gravy

Oh, with the rest of the meal: be careful with the stuffing you use, some is not veggie,

What - no lard to hold it all together?

On the website, they apparently do their own brand of it. Perhaps they didn't have it in stock.

Tesco apparently do a Bisto one.

The only way to be sure you have got it right is to ask them directly. I am sure they will appreciate your enquiry.

I prefer the Quorn ones - take 'em out the wrapper and surround with stuffing then put it in a loaf dish with silver foil over the top.

Serve them up a raw turnip and be done with it. For the love of Jesus don't let their hippy ideals encroach upon the festival of meat that is the Christmas dinner.

Give me beans on toast, that solves your gravey problem.

Anyway, curiosity has got the better of me on this one. What do veggies eat as an Xmas meal anyway? Potatoes, Veggies then what?

I could swear we did this last year

roast spuds, roast turnips, cauli, brocolli, carrots, peas, sprouts, quorn roast, sosmix & stuffing (usually sage and onion)loaf, stuffing (another variety), that gravy concoction mentioned above

I find it hard to move afterwards

A friend once said that there are two types of veggies:

meat veggies & veggie veggies

I'm the former - I just substitute a veg alternative and get on with it, the others don't do traditional, and you DO get some odd meals (nice I hasten to add, but odd)

I find it hard to make special arrangements for these special eaters. Same is with the ones that expect you to have herbal tea in your house. WTF??? They should bring their own, if they are gonna be acting so detoxed than others. Pain in the backside IMO.

Seeing nobody has said it yet:

Bowl of sprouts: Seasonal, festive and veggie friendly*

For gravy, liquidise said sprouts and mix with some vegetable stock cubes and the left over water that the sprouts were boiled in. Sprouts with sprout gravy. Add tabasco for taste. Mmmmm

*may need a gas mask later

Fek them - They are coming to your house. This really anoys me on Come Dine With Me, all the meat eaters have to make something for the veggies, and the veggies serve fart food to the meat eaters. How come everyone has to reduce themselves to their levels of malnutrition

There have been quite a few who do make the effort and cook meat for their guests. The worst was that Vegan chap in Wales who actually championed it but everyone said his food tasted like s***e.

I wouldn't, at all. But I wouldn't impose any extra deliberation and effort on some perfectly normal Turkey eaters on their traditional day. "Look at me! I am a vegetarian, I am ! I am so special. I do things differently, and I want to make your life difficult by forcing you to cook some grass and dandelions exculsively for me, in addition to your usual traditional meat feast. I am so veggie that I will soon get a huge aubergine tattooed on my forehead " Bleddy pain, as I said before.

If you go to vegetarian people's houses for meals, you have to eat their grass, they don't make special effort to serve meat on a plate for you. There are some that do, but not many.

If I were a veggie, I'd take my own tin of spaghetti with me, to eat with the roast vegetables from my host.
