.... But in the mean time, let us watch 1 million pounds worth of fireworks :

I don't want to sound a kill joy, but if we are that much in debt, was there any need. Can we not just have a big screen of last years display

Or just get someone like Virgin to sponsor and run it. Mr Branson is the sort of chap that would like to get his name on something like this Im sure. Let him pay for the fireworks and then charge him an extra £5m to show his name, let him push the button etc.

I can understand the need to cut government spending, but not why they have to keep giving our cash away to so many others, money which we have to borrow and pay interest on too.

Don't know how much the fireworks cost but it cannot be denied it was an outstanding display. Could not help thinking about all the organisation etc to make it all work.

Another reason to 'rent' it out for advertising. Start getting money back into the government rather than them throwing it away because the public will just reimburse through taxes that we have to pay.

...saying that they will probably only fritter it away if they start making money anyway. Should we vote for Lord Sugar to be our next PM?

It was £313000 and not £1m.

And bring in millions of pounds of income into London. A good deal I think.

I have a feeling the fireworks maybe a practice run for the olympics?

If the company hosting it did a deal (i.e cost only) in order to gain the olympics contract, then whilst its a huge waste of money up in smoke; its minimising the actual cost and preparing for future events. Its not like they could just let off one single £8.99 rocket off Big Ben then call it a day.

(or is that too much like common sense? ).

Hopefully its just London tax payers that foot the bill. Or is that just wishful thinking

I'm sure the 250,000 who were there to see it thought it was brilliant VFM.

I'd rather spend £313000 on fireworks than £9billion on the Olympics. Much better value as no Olympics has ever returned a profit.

Why should Londoners pick up the tab, it's a national show piece that nobody wants

Nope. Tanked up Thursday night.

I predict £1.50 by July, getting close to £2.00 by the following year.

So the 250000 people who were there just happened to be passing by when the fireworks went off did they

And I doubt if Londoners would mind giving up all of 4p each to fund the show.

I think we would have chaos on our hands if that happened.

Aagh, its only News years day and we are all moaning and getting depressed about this coming year already. Anyone expecting a salary rise, new job, investments etc to compensate?

I was totally against the Olympics, however now Labour are out of power, someone else can't suddenly pull plug after billions have been poured down the drain. So we have to save face and go ahead. And if we are going ahead, then we should do it right.

This is global ***** waving at its best; We have to out-do China which I doubt we'll manage, but at least we have to try.

It was once said that if Petrol went over £1.00 there would be chaos. There was, briefly. Now it's over £1.20 and we just pay it.

Soon it'll be over £1.30 a litre, and steadily rising. We'll moan about it, yes. We'll still pay it though as we need our cars.

And the last Government made it illegal to block fuel refineries. Think the Army would be drafted in to remove any protesters.

No we wouldn't as we just sit back and take it. It isn't that long ago it was less than a £1 a litre, a supposedly psychological barrier that would see people rioting in the streets if it ever came to pass. It did and no one did anything. Now it's just rolled past £1.25 a litre and still nothing.

What does make me laugh is the repeated carping at Labour by the Tories when they were in opposition over the fuel duty increases as a) it was them that introduced it in the 90s and b) they have done nothing except carry on with it since they got to power despite intimating they would as part of the run up to the election.

As I keep saying, they are all as bad as each other.

£300K for the fireworks £1.8million for the whole event.

I wonder how good a deal you would think it was had Labour still been in power

I said a year ago that once the fuel companies got it over £1 a litre the price would take off andf fly.

Are we REALLY saying that crude oil costs 30% MORE than it did a year ago? Or more, really, as the cost of petrol to us is mostly tax.............

It wouldnt make any difference. Blair backed the London Eye which is where it has all happened since the millenium and I think it is an excellent event.

I've got to fill up my car today, not looking forward to it at all.
Also, we have oil heating and the profiteering by the oil suppliers during the cold spell has been shocking. I can barely afford to fill up the tank now.
It went up from 40p per litre to 72p. How on earth can they justify that
If the gas/electric comanies tried to double household bills there would be hell on.

Lee,

Gas and leccy companies are regulated whereas those supplying heating oil are not.

Regulation can sometimes be good for the consumer.

I wouldn't worry about it. Remember the Tories promised to set a price on a litre then vary fuel duty to keep it there? I'm sure they follow through on that manifesto commitment.

Thanks Chip.
I know, but it's about time it was regulated. It's getting very tiresome getting shafted everytime the weather takes a turn for the worse.

Over the last few years they virtually have though.

20% rise here, 10% rise there. 2% lower here, then another 10% rise there.

They have gone up. Just over a few years you don't notice it as much.
