I'm looking to free up a bit of cash and the first port of call is my mobile, as prices are so good, I could have considered getting a 2g or 3G.
I do love the iPhone this the idea of just downgrading, but I don't want to go ahead and do the change if the previous versions are pretty poor?
I've had a Desire previously, but I wouldn't want to pay the money they command whereas the iPhone is worthy IMO.
Are the older iPhones much different to the 3GS?

A BIT slower on the 3G.
Mine is jailbroken, so I've still got the video camera etc
The 2G is pretty poor imho.
If you need to free up cash - it's a good option I think.

Is it a good thing to jailbreak? I know it can provide more app's, but is that about it?
And is it safe to buy the older versions of I-Phone...are they fairly reliable?

A 3G is a bit slower and a 2G although good at the time crawls along now. I had a 3G and my wife a 3GS and there was some difference (especially on OS4) but it was okay.
You wont free up much cash though: A 3GS goes for just over £250 and a 3G for just under £200.

Thanks for that.
Not decided 100% yet, but I'll keep an eye out for a fairly priced 3G. If it doesn't happen, it's no big deal, but didn't know what the older ones were like.

2G was, unless I'm very much mistaken, US only, even Canada didn't get 2G's, so getting one would be a pain, and I'd really not suggest doing so.
Personally I don't think you are going to free up much, if any cash by downgrading your iPhone, I'd stick with the 3GS and have a look at your contract and see if there are savings to be made there.

Thanks guys.
Nothing i can do with the contract at the moment. If i manage to at least get £100 quid back or around there, i think i'd be fairly happy tbh. Doesn't sound as though i'd be TOO unhappy with the speed etc of the 3G....i could always sell it on again later on if it's not what i want. It IS only a phone after all, though a very good one.

I work fast....8GB 3G just bought for a very nice price. ![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
If it doesn't suit, or i need more cash my way, i'll sell it on....just need to jailbreak it when i get it. Where is best to get this done? It's not unlocked, so need to do this first so it'll work with my Orange sim. It appears locked on O2, so can i maybe just remove the lock?

Ok cheers.
Is that right, that you can't update the OS if you jailbreak, without losing the unlock? Might just go for a straight unlock if that's the case. Never once felt i've been losing out with the 3GS.

Unlocking may be a problem depending on what baseband you have installed. Have a read through here: http://www.iclarified.com/unlock/index.php
Basically the only way to do it on the latest baseband is to install an old baseband which may mess things up in the future.

If the person you bought it from bought it from O2, get him to get them to unlock it before you buy it, you might be able to to do later via O2 but it's simple for them to do now. Google O2 iPhone unlock.
