Mason fought between 1984 and 1994, with 37 wins Former British boxing champion Gary Mason has died in a cycling crash in south London.
Mason, 48, was on his bicycle in Sandy Lane South, Wallington, on Thursday morning when he was involved in a collision with a van.
The retired fighter was pronounced dead at the scene.
A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and bailed until March pending further inquiries.
The 43-year-old, who was driving a white Vauxhall "combi" van, had stopped at the scene.
One defeat
Mason fought 38 times as a professional between 1984 and 1994, with 37 wins.
His only defeat was against future world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Officers were alerted at about 6.15am yesterday to a van in collision with a bicycle on Sandy Lane South, near the junction with Woodcote Road, Wallington.
"The cyclist, aged 48 years, was pronounced dead at the scene."
A post-mortem examination will be held at St Helier Hospital mortuary and an inquest will be opened at Croydon Coroner's Court.

I met Gary Mason quite a few times both through boxing and he had sports and jewelery shops near where i live, a genuine nice guy and gentle giant in his manner, but boy was he big.
It's a terrible shame and very sad.

I know that bit of road, largely very straight, so really is a tragic accident.
I don't know how dark it is at 6.15 to be honest? Quite a shock really. Very sad. He came over very well and I thought he was a good boxer.

This is awful news to hear, my thoughts go out to his family and friends.
He was one of the nice guys of boxing and a good fighter too, he fought his heart out against Lennox Lewis, with a cut eye and being dominated for the early part of the fight he really went after Lewis towards the end and fair play to him for showing such heart, courage and determination to come back the way he did.
RIP Gary

I see nothing wrong with having a bit of a laugh, it's the British way.
Anyhow, he'll be greatly missed, shame the van driver couldn't manage it.

Very sad but all deaths are especially if they are not due to old age.
However what makes his death more signicifcant than any other I doubt he was the only person to have been killed in a car accident on that day and even at that age, maybe we should have a daily obituary where SNers can list everyone who has died not jus the famous retired ones....in the interest of equality ;-)

I can remember watching him on the TV willing him to go all the way and get the world title. Always seemed to be overshadowed by either Frank or Lennox though
Always came across as a nice guy on tele
Sad to hear such a positive person gone
