Default Shipping Forecast

This has been in the news because it overrode the end of the Test Match.

I often listen to it whilst waiting for the 1.00 am news but often wonder who uses it. Wouldn't fisherman and others use a more detailed local forecast from the met' before venturing out or returning to port?

Do they give you pressure differences and expected locations of lows in say 12 hours

im sure you would need it if you were just fetching pots in the bay

I would be very surprised if there was not a professional forecast available to fishermen as there is of course to airmen.

Whenever I speak to local fishermen they always seems to have a very good idea of how the weather will be in the near future.

Not as far as I can tell. Storm warnings first and then conditions about an hour before at different locations mm of HG, visibility, wind strength and direction and general indication of what lies ahead e.g. rain later or wind increasing. That's about it. dl

Perhaps the fisherman were listening to the cricket through digital

I just like listening to it, all seems so mysterious and isolating.

It's very useful to seafarers because it gives a general synopsis (which you can use to plot a pressure chart), as well as forecasts and current conditions for all the different areas.

These days you can look at the internet and also many seafarers use the Navtex service, but it's still useful and somewhat of a tradition.
