Where to stay in New York
I have my first ever visit to NYC coming up at the end of the month. Does anyone have any advice on what the best areas to stay in are? I wanna do the whole tourist thing. Was thinking of staying around the Times Square area but open to ideas.

I hope it's been updated since then as it was starting to get a little shabby. (you'll see why it was only £950 )
All in all though, a great location to stay in.

It doesn't really matter where you stay mate. Well it didn't for us as we spent so little time in the apartment. Everything is very accessible from any where, the grid and number system makes navigation simples. If it was too far to walk we just got our selves on the avenue we needed or one running parallel and jumped in a cab.
Research and plan it online before you go to make the most of your time. We took the Staton Island ferry one day by chance, it's a free commuter taxi and gives you some nice, non tourist views. Down that way too is the 'seaport' nearly underneath the Brooklyn Bridge, very nice food and drink and a good evening out al fresco. And Battery Park where you will get the Statue Of Liberty boat from.
East Village is a pretty good base and very cultural, cafe bars and clubs of all types.
We had a fantastic week. I'm sure you will enjoy yourselves.

We stayed at The Red Roof Inn in November 2007. It had just been re-furbished then. Spot on for location.

Just got back from NYC and as b13bat says its not about the hotel, you only sleep in it and if your trip was like mine, fueled with partying and 'broads' you wont be there much at all....
I stayed in St James hotel just 100 yards off Time Square, was all booked through Expedia, NYC, LA and Vegas Flights and hotels £950 Booomb ...
Good luck mate and be aware tourist spots i.e. Time Square is expensive so head out and about..

My NYC tips:
Don't do the empire state building, go up the Rockerfeller instead......around dusk so you see night and day. You also get the view of the ESB.
Walk Brooklyn bridge, but from Brooklyn...this way you dont have to turn around to view the skyline.
Don't bother with the statue of liberty boat trip. Take the Staten Island ferry instead. It's free and offer the same views....and saves around 2 hours queing and security.
Some of the resturants near times square are a bit crap. Ruby Foos is OK, but you might want to book the night before, in fact I'd do this for all places.

We stayed at the 'Distrikt Hotel' when we went in February. It's only recently been finished and all of the rooms are in A1 condition. nice big Plasma, free wifi which was running at about 20mb when I tested it on my phone.
Free coffee and hot apple juice, help yourself on they way out. Just around the corner from the NY Times building and Times square. Really central.
Would highly recommend it. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat.

Bryant Park Hotel is central to everything.
2 mins walk to Times Square, 5th avenue for shopping, Empire State & Rockerfeller Centre. Plus theres a tube station at the bottom of the street.
Oh and the bonus of a lovely park opposite and restaurants where you can sit outside.
Don't take the taxis, the Subway is much cheaper.
Enjoy! Its amazing.

We stayed at the Algonquin http://www.algonquinhotel.com/ . Make sure with any hotel that you are above, say, the 8th or 9th floor otherwise the 24-hour activity will keep you awake

Just come back from NYC, we stayed at the Grand Hyatt on 42nd street. highly recommended. dead central: its between the chysler building and central station.
all depends on yr budget.
I found the subway a really easy way to get around the city.
I would do the Empire state building: you just need to do these things early.
we headed down after breakfast, was inside for 9.00 am and at the top by 9.15.
I think yr screwed if you leave it later.
we did do staten island and ellis island. to be honest statue of liberty is a bleeding statue. you can see it from a distance. the ellis immigration centre was fascinating: I'd do that. massive queues, again unless you get up early.
have a night out in little italy to eat. thats pretty good fun.
