Default Rare Earth Magnets

Does anyone have any knowledge of, or used, any of the new breed of Rare Earth Neodymium magnets (N50 or N52). Widely used in industry but a bit of black art surrounding them.

I am trying to find out more about them. My knowledge of magnetism started and stopped at the school "iron filings" stage

I know that they are getting to be a very rich commodity, and that China has most of it and won't let the US have it.

Stand by for action.

One day.

These are widely available - have used them to mount kit onto vehicles, what is your interest? Where to source them, or how they are manufactured. Keep them well clear of pacemakers - seemingly small NdFeB magnets can be hugely powerful.

My interest stems from a long chat with a guy who is experimenting with N50 magnets on vehicle engine injectors and air intake lines. He also uses them in boiler systems.

I have always been a little sceptical about the concept but there is certainly something in the idea and the guy I was speaking to is taking a novel approach.

I have some sources but more welcome. Yes thay are pretty powerful and keep away from videos/data storage etc. A couple of kids in the USA have died after swallowing them which resulted in the magnets coming together in the gut and causing a fatal blockage

I used to work (sales engineer) with bonded and sintered NdFeB - what do you want to know?

I want to find out what effect they have on fuel (gas, light oil, petrol and diesel) by clamping a magnet to the fuel line. I am fully aware that magnets have been sold to put on fuel pipes but there is an atmosphere of scepticism surrounding these.

So I am trying to find out if they do have an effect and, in layman's terms, how they work - e.g a change to the molecular structure of carbon chains that leads to an improved combustion.

And what effect they would have on an air line and, again, why this might be the case.

So I am trying to pinpoint some scientific testing and establish where they are used in industry.

What were you selling them for in industry terms?

Any help you can provide would be welcome. And I am going through Google but that is a bit of a nightmare if, like me, you don't know where to start.

Thanks, David

Zero effect, likewise the stupid things that people put on water pipes to stop limescale are also fraudulent.

I read a while back to align molecules using a magnet you massive amounts of power and the worlds biggest magnet.

All a con AFAIK, could I interest you in a power balance bracelet instead

p.s. I bought a bag full if 3mm long Neodymium magnets of ebay for a couple of quid. They quite nicely fit into train/tube card reader slots and wipe tickets as they get put through

A very typical reaction but I'd bet a pound to a pinch of snuff that you have never actually tried them yourself?

And it rather begs the question of why major industrial companies spend thousands of pounds on them.

I discussed scepticism with the guy that I was talking to. If you went around to his workshop he would ask you to hold your hand as close as you could over a lighter flame. He would then put a pair of magnets around the lighter and you would pull your hand away in pain as the flame increased. Party trick to some, crude evidence to others.

Description

This article is from the Scientific Skepticism FAQ, by Paul Johnson Paul@treetop.demon.co.uk with numerous contributions by others.

8.10: Can magnets improve fuel efficiency or descale pipes? (Strange Machines: Free Energy and Anti-Gravity)

Both of these questions come around fairly regularly. Some companies
sell magnets which clip around pipes. Sometimes they are sold for use
in hard water areas, where they are supposed to prevent the buildup of
limescale. On other occasions they are sold for cars, where they are
supposed to increase fuel efficiency.

Neither of these claims has ever been substantiated by careful
testing, and there is no theoretical explanation for the supposed
effects. The advertisers try to make it sound like there is, but its
actually just pseudo-scientific eyewash.

Note that in some cases installing the fuel magnets according to the
instructions *will* give increased fuel efficiency. This is because
the instructions tell you to adjust the carburettor. The result is
that the engine runs leaner than it was designed to, causing higher
production of nitrous oxides and a shorter life. The magnet has
nothing to do with it.

If this worked then car companies would install it themselves and
hence sell more cars.

I am trying to get underneath the sceptical view. I am sure I could spend my day unearthing the snake oil quotes but I think there is more to it than that. dl

Produce some independent scientific evidence and then we can accept it as an effective product..

Fairys, dragons, mythical sky pixies can be added to the same pot

You should have better things to worry about

I thought magnetic fuel line additions were as effective as vortex air intake additions.
Would be interesting if it be proved otherwise.
Magnetism is a fascinating thing.

I use magnets in peoples mouths to keep various devices in place........for example..

http://www.prestige-dental.co.uk/technovent_25_393.html

And of course they influence nuclear magnetic spin.......as in MRI scans.

And that's about it really LOL

Thanks - I'll add that to my list.

Tell your nurses to be careful though

"If a magnet is swallowed, it can block respiratory and digestive tracts. If more than one magnet is swallowed, they might connect and serious issues such as completely closing off the esophagus. The simple fact of having the magnet inside the body can lead ot infection as well.

Additionally, because of the extremely high magnetism of larger NIB magnets, they can literally fly across a room if ferromagnetic metals are present. Any body part caught in the path of a magnet hurtling towards an object, or an object hurtling towards a magnet, is in danger of serious danger if the pieces do fly around. Getting a finger trapped between a magnet and a table top can be enough to shatter the finger bone. And if the magnet connects to something with enough momentum and force, it can shatter, firing dangerous shrapnel that can puncture skin and bones in many directions. It is important to know what’s in your pockets and what type of equipment is present when handling these magnets."

Mythbusters. maybe not the greatest scientific program in the world but entertaining, they tested fuel magnets on one of there episodes

Great Gas Conspiracy
Myth: Automakers and fuel suppliers are in collusion to keep us dependent on expensive gasoline and inefficient cars. There are many devices that one can use to cut your fuel consumption.

They got a carbureted car and a fuel-injected car to test several types of devices. The cars were placed on a dynamometer, which allows the car to drive without moving anywhere.

Test devices and additives:

•Fuel line magnets: working on the "principles of hydrodynamics," they are supposed to align the molecules for more efficient consumption.
•Acetone additive: supposed to make gasoline burn more efficiently
•300mpg 'super' carburetor
•Hydrogen fuel cell generator: flammable hydrogen gas produced by electrolysis. Adam labeled it "Gasbuster: Stickin' it to the Man"
They tested each car on the dynamometer at 35mph and 55mph with each 'device.'

Carburetor car:

•Baseline: 17mpg at 35mph and 25mpg at 55mph
•Magnets: exactly the same as baseline busted
•Acetone: 16.7mpg at 35mph and 24mpg at 55mph busted
•Super carb: much worse than baseline, 12mpg at 35mph and 17.7mpg at 55mph busted
Fuel-injected car

•Baseline: 19mpg at 35mph and 27mpg at 55mph
•Magnets: 18mpg at 35mph and 26mpg at 55mph busted
•Acetone: 18mpg at 35mph and 26mpg at 55mph busted
