Default My goodness, no wonder plumbers are dear........

Just been out for some copper fittings and a 2m length of copper pipe.

The fittings were £17, the copper pipe was £15.26 for 2m.

I have a short length left in my garage with a sticker on it £7.40, approx five years back, so more than doubled in price.

Must have seen you coming mate, copper fittings here are a couple of euros each and the pipe is 7or8 I think can't remember, and slightly dearer if you want it insulated .

Most plumbers round here appear to use plastic pipe. Likely due to material costs.

Whilst I like plastic pipe, I hate compression fittings and find push-fit to be highly dubious in high pressure mains water applications. Plus they look fugly when on show. Also the last thing you want behind partioning is a intermittantly drippy compression/push fit joint; especially if the pipe isn't clipped/fixed securely.

My worries were confirmed in a freind's attic en-suite conversion. A push-fit pipe behind a studded wall blew apart. Turns out the pipes were not fixed or secured, so were allowed move with every of/off cyle of the taps. Eventually that movement wore the union and the pipe wriggled itself out the joint.

How many plumbers properly secure plastic pipe when runing underneath exitsing floors/walls? Doesn't matter, they'll be long gone and out of guarantee when they fail.

Call me cynical, but give me solder-rings/end feed any day.

The fittings are pennies compared to the £40 per hour they charge.

if he is paying £183 for the part you have a good deal there as it isnt just the time he spends at you place it is also the time and cost of getting to you and picking up the parts, good suppliers arent like supermarkets on every street corner.

The fan on my potterton boiler was on top of the unit, no seal to the casing just a simple 2 wire push coonector, & 3 self tapping bolts.

The supplied service / installation manual even showed how to remove / replace it

Mind you i dont have to worry having a gas fitter / plumber for a brother in law

Same thing happened to my Worcester boiler. It was pretty obvious to me that the fan wasn't working, mostly because it was in it's death throws (noisy) a few days previous.

At the time we were on a British Gas dual fuel tariff and they had a deal where you paid them £99 to fix any boiler fault. The bloke turned up, squirted a bit of WD40 on the fan shaft / bearings and got it going again. He then proceeded to tell me that if we were on a service contract with them then it would have been left at that, hoping that the fan would go on for a few more months / years. However because we'd paid for the £99 fix anything deal he would get us a new fan and come back to fit it. Result

As mentioned looked like a easy job and not beyond the realms of DIY. Mind you my boiler is out in the garage so less chance of killing everybody with CO poisoning

There was an article in one of the nationals that had a lady plumber in the centre of London earning £80K a year.

Pretty sure it was in the Daily Mail so in hindsight may not have happened.

The butch one

The price of copper is very high. We are having our kitchen done and have had to have the oven electrical cable increased in size to 6mm. Its like £1.99 a metre and thats trade price.
