Although it sounds mental, what if it was one if your kids and they were injured?

Totally agree but to take kids out of school up here ( jockland ) my kids need a signed consent form. I would imagine its more to protect the school than the kids but rules are there for a reason!

The kids in question are of GCSE age and hence probably able to sledge down a small slope without too much mishap. That said, if the worst were to happen and someone got hurt then i would like to think that the parents involved would be adult enough to realise that no harm was intended, it was indeed a freakish accident and their child was old enough to decide for themselves if it was a good idea or not. Bottom line is, would you take your children sledging if you had the chance? We all know the answer is yes so just because a teacher decided to do the same (as regularly used to happen in decades gone by when i dare say you were a child in a similar situation) does not mean all rational thought needs to be thrown out of the window!

If you care to read the article it states that the teacher in question is accountable for nine charges in total and guilty of four - how absurd! Notice also how the parents of the children involved don't have a bad word to say about the 'incident'............

Wouldn't really care. All about growing up. As said above **** happens.

They could be injured anytime, doing anything.

That's why we have a nation of overweight kids, as their parents wont let them out to play incase they get hurt.

So shall we ban school sports as well then in case one of my kids gets injured. If it were my kids I'd quite happily let them go sledging with the teacher.

Whooo, he was found guilty of ignoring cautionary words of warning from colleagues.

ffs what planet are these committees on, what kind of trumped up dribble is that. what would some of these barmy committees do if placed in real life situations?
Could you imagine them dealing with an incident in one of the current hotspots on the other side of the world?

Again, people cannot interpret the law correctly.

Should never have been sacked.

Stupid bosses and civil servants. Not Elf and Safety.

He was dismissed for failing to follow the school's health and safety policy.

Maybe I read that bit wrong then

And the policy was written by a stupid boss or civil servant.

The law asks you to assess risks and take 'reasonably practicable ' or appropriate steps to minimise them.

He should have documented his risk assessment but even though he didn't it's hardly a sacking offence. So I stand by my statement

As you see from my quotes i agree its totally stupid

It was more about the fact that he broke rules that could leave the school open to the "where there is blame there is a claim" mob.

This has got nothing to do with health and safety, just an excuse because of the fear of litigation if one of the kids got injured. Remember, 'where there's blame there's a claim'.

An accident could cost the education authority a fortune, their liability insurance would go through the roof making it unafordable.

There is no health and safety legislation that prevents kids playing conkers or sledging, look on the HSE website for proof.

Interesting bit at the bottom about his dismissal being appropriate, "in view of his disciplinary record".

A primary teacher at my wife's school thought it would be nice to organise an after school cooking club. She sorts all the ingredients out, plans it all etc. She has been told she has to do all the washing up because the kids 'could have an allergic reaction to the washing up liquid'! FFS!

how things have changed. Remember being taken to the a construction industry training centre where at 15 I got to run a stihl saw through a steel girder and shovel up some sand with a JCB. Cant see many field trips like that happen nowdays.

I ended up on a day visit to Frankland prison during my works experience.

Hate to think what would of happened if they found out about that.

Yeah, remember the field trip to Matlock in Primary school. Got up to all sorts:-

- Mate standing on a bridge wall, looking over the river Derwent about 20-30 feet below! (was prob much closer, but that's how I remember it).

- Me walking along a 4-5 inch wide wooden damn, separating **** stagnant water on one side; clean clear on the other. And you can guess which side I fell in? The teachers pissed themselves.

- Buying Black Widow catapults.

- Walking along the top of the canal barge's narrow top plank.

Etc, etc...

Ironically, 30 odd years later I find myself living in Leic - not a million miles from Matlock. Life's weird.

sounds like he got a bum deal on that one. I don't have kids, but if i did i wouldn't want them wrapped up in cotton wool and kept in a padded room.

i broke my arm when i was younger, did exactly what the sign said not too, my own fault, no one else's yet i bet i could have turned round and sued those who put the trampaleen there.

It could be said to depend on the place where they were skiing.

If it was not overly steep or had any obstacles then I just don't see what all the fuss was about. If the worse they could do is to fall off in the snow, that is all part of life and can be regarded as valuable education for the children involved. We all have to learn that we have to look out for ourselves in life. Mollycoddling children so that they never experience such situations before they leave school is a gross dereliction and they would enter the world outside at a big disadvantage.

The PC Plonkers in life have got a lot to answer for!

You let your kids use it? How utterly irresponsible of you.
