Question Where do I stand with this hotel bill?

Bit of advice if poss. I organised a stag do last year to Germany, booked the hotel direct through their own website. Basically it was a bit of a disaster with mixed up rooms, 1 room short and a few other things like the bar not being open. I booked with my credit card online and I planned to dispute when we got back, anyway they never took the money but now a year later they have written to me asking for payment. I guess they don't have my credit card details as they would just take it.

Where do I stand? I'm happy to come to an arrangement but no way will I pay the full amount. Do I just ignore and if so can they do anything?

Write back saying about the problems, asking what reduction they would give.

DO NOT admit to the saty.

If they are arsey, ignore any further letters.

Why not just say you paid in cash when you were there? A year later and a different country how can they prove you didn't ?

Did you raise these concerns at the time?

If so then I think you have a strong case. If you did not then you are on a much stickier wicket, barring the approach of ignoring their letter.

We did as a group and the staff were pretty understanding but there way no management and I didnt want to cause an atmosphere, I gave them my card again when we left and thought if I can argue a discount later then fine it is a few beers in the kitty for drinks here but if not we still had a good weekend.

Dont think they could,

There is a side to me that thinks if they cant run a business (quite a big chain of hotels) and take guests money when I have given my card to them twice then tough luck and I will treat this as a bit of good fortune. But dont want it to bite me in the **** should they have an avenue to come after me.

How much are they asking for? Have you collected contributions from the rest of the group already?

Cancel the card that you gave them and then tell them to go and whistle.

I'd do nothing in terms of correspondance with them at this stage.

They clearly don't have the card details otherwise they would have charged it, and are probably hoping that they can chase up some old bad debt on the off chance of getting some money. Entering into correspondance with them will only lead to it being used as evidence for them should they attempt anything else more legal. If they do go down that route, then let's see exactly what that is and deal with it accordingly (i.e. worst case, if they make any form of court attempt either pay up or look at your options again).
