Default Smartphone choices

I'm planning to get my first smartphone next week.
I think I'll probably go for the HTC Desire or Desire HD, however battery life is putting me off a bit.
Can any owners on here tell me how long I can expect with light /moderate use eg- a bit of surfing, a few emails / texts and 3 or 4 calls a day?
Also whats the standby time like?
And......which is best? Should I be considering anything else? I've ruled out the iphone as I cant find a decent deal.
cheers!

Everyone I know who's a normal user charges overnight then often makes it through the day. Shame you can't afford an iPhone.

If your only reason for not getting an iPhone was price, then you can get £150 cashback on voda thru quidco

My HTC desire lasts two days with such light use as that.

I always charge my phones in the evening just in case.

Even with that I can still get a better deal for a HTC. quidco and topcashback do smaller incentives for other phones too.

I have recently got a Desire HD and its flippin awesome.

As for battery life I got an app yesterday called Juice Defender. It lets you turn things on and off when you don't need it (wifi for instance) and manages the battery usage. I've been using the phone alot in the evening and draining the battery very quickly. With this running its made a really big improvement.

Samsung Galaxy S I-9000 Android phone, battery lasts 3-4 days.

Plus if you have any other Samsung kit like TV or BD Player the allshare stuff is great.

2 days for normal use, 1 day for heavy use on a HTC Desire

I leave wifi, bluetooth, data and half bright screen on all the time, probably could be better if you switched these off....

If you want an iphone wait a few months for an updated one with all the bugs ironed out

And make sure you get a flatrate data plan or you could be in for a nasty shock come the end of the month

This is a big issue with smart phones. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Official standby times seems to be utter BS (300+hours...yeah maybe if its left turned off). When I go away for a long weekend without any practical access to a power source, I'm screwed.

I've returned a 3GS and and Samsung galaxy Europa because I've found battery life unaccetable.

On a camping trip last summer my mate had to find a phone shop to buy a car charger for his new 3GS because the battery ran down on the second day.

I've been given good praise from a friends with a SE Xperia mini pro. But I think it maybe too small to be usuable and the slightly older version of Android is a bit of a put-off (2.1 was only released last december and is the last update it will get: http://www.xperiax10.net/2011/01/06/...oyo-or-beyond/ ) .

I quite like the x10 mini, the mrs is planning to get one of them. I definitely want something bigger for myself though.
I'll buy a few spare batteries i think
