Wasn't he grooming his son to take over? So that's gone by the board then. Can't see him lasting for more than a week or two.
Then Yemen and Jordan? It must be getting the heavyweights like Saudi worried. I wonder if the Iranian people actually get to hear about all this or is the Internet dead over there?
Just hope bloodsheds are avoided. dl

Good coverage on BBC news. One commentator emphasised that this wasn't about religion and said that the Coptic Christians have stood outside Mosques to defend protestors during Friday prayers. If this becomes a democratic revolution, it will change the whole political landscape of the region. The alternative has very limited appeal.
It's on a knife-edge.

A curfew's been imposed now and the military are out on the streets. Will be interesting to see if the protestors refuse. It's now a battle of wills and strength between the people and the state. If the people win, it absolutely has to be a democratic revolution.

The tanks are out and the ruling party's HQ is on fire. The people have to keep the momentum up now. I'm just so nervous about the power vacuum if the people get their will. Twitter's awash with calls for the fall of dictatorships across the Arab world; it reminds me of Eastern Europe in the 80s. Gunshots now.

Believe it or not I am just about to put my wife and two older girls on a plane to Berlin – for a weekend break – one revolution is enough

Egypt is on country where Christians, Copts, & Muslims have lived side by side for years, with no real problems.
They all are very tolerant, and as long as you respect there cultures, you will be fine.
The trouble comes from a radical islamist group who wanted to destablise the area, and the nonviolence pact
As far as the tourists go, they are not being blamed or used as political ammo, the locals rely heavily on tourism, and are acutely aware of the ramifications should the tourist trade stop
We had no problems when we were out there, in fact, they went out of there way to look after us

Although if it's a popular democratic revolution, it could be fantastic for the region.
Have a good one.
Clinton's giving her response. Backing the right to freedom of expression and assembly. Calling for reform.

Had to laugh at this. A pal from work had booked a week away in Tunisia for him and his Mrs. Cancelled it due to the issues there and booked a week in Egypt - Then this happens! LOL

You'll just get another strong-man or corrupt plutocrat in charge.

I hear what you're saying. One hopes, though, that the power vacuum will be filled with a real democractic administration and that this is maintained. And yes, I do know this went ****-up in Palestine.

The West needs Egypt. We've always had to choose between friendly secular dictatorship or Islamism. There's a popular (hopefully democratic) uprising. Get. The ****. Behind it!

I thought you'd be celebrating a popular uprising against a dictatorship, but no, you spit your venom and your bile and your vitriol at the Americans. You don't care about the people, you just hate America.

Doesn't tend to work when you have seething masses in poverty; too much desperation.
