Is is just me, or does anyone else find the excessive audio compression/quantisation annoying as hell?

I mean, who thought that a poor quality 96kbps mp3 sound sample was acceptable for a national TV advert?

I agree.

It is just the same on the amateur radio bands. Some people wind up the compression until it is painful to hear. Makes them less understandable too.

Just about anyone who has been brought up in an age where iPods and the likes are considered 'hi-fi' sadly!

I don't why, but whenever I hear a guitar or piano recorded at a low bit rate, it makes my teeth ache (probably because it makes me grind my teeth from cringing). It akin to the "S" distortion on a knackered/worn-out vinyl LP.

I guess this is why the speakers used in the majority of modern TVs/surround-in-a-box AV units only use one-way drivers. The lack of tweeters would make this nowhere near as obvious.

Unfortunately my front/centre speakers are 2 way full range jobbies. So I can't escape it when watching live TV and teh remote is 1ft out of arm's reach
