Default New insurance laws coming soon ?

I've only just found out about this http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/new-...-coming/255510

Basically, if you own a car and it's taxed it must have insurance on it whether it's on the road or not ! If you don't want to insure it you must cancel the tax and declare it sorn.

Yep - Another way of saying it is if it isn't SORNed and isn't insured, it can be seized (and crushed).

It's an easy rule to comply with, it's also easy to get round.

How so? I think the plan is to simplify the system, (so they don't have to catch you on the road with no tax/insurance/MOT). Getting around it suggests having a car that isn't SORNed, but isn't picked up. The last owner is going to feel the pain if he doesn't fess up who who he sold it to.

Why not just rob a bank and pay to make your car legit.

I can't see why you would want a car taxed and road-worthy but not insured, even if you are selling it you'd keep the insurance going until it was gone for test-drive purposes.

Can't say this is something that I'd really get hot under the collar about

I hadn't thought about small bikes, but how expensive is the insurance on one of them?

Which is why I always have some cover even when the car is SORNed, would you want your pride and joy nicked only to get nothing back for it.

When they're being restored they are usually SORNed anyway, so no issue.

It is an attempt to cut down on the number of uninsured vehicles on the road. Seems fair enough to me.

After speaking to the insurance company about insuring me for a VW polo 1.9 sdi..... I might have to sell my car

I was hoping to keep the scoob and run an oil burner for a few months, then sell my car when the weather clears up.

BUT with a quote for me on the Polo of £459!! I am thinking that the renewal price is going to be through the roof!

I might have no choice than to sell my car (hopefully) around Easter time and then look for something else in the holidays.
