Tinned foods will last decades and decades as long as the seal remains, just like bottled stuff.
Its other stuff that can be of issue, but best before is a guide line use by is a recommendation.

I'll give most things a few days over the date but not long. Mince meat goes that kind of dodgy grey after a while. Chicken packets can start to expand which I don't think is great to eat.

There was a bloke who ate a 50yr old can of chicken soup without a problem.
i've eaten tinned soup and sausage and beans that was 3yrs + out of date.
My rule is if it looks and smells ok and you get it nice and hot, (38 degrees i believe is the magic number that kills any nasties) get it down ya

Gordon Bennett! I wouldn't want to be with you after you've eaten 3-year out-of-date sausage and beans!!!

There is a major difference between expiration dates and best before. My mum has stuff in her cupboards with price tags with 1/2p on them

When my grandad died in 1999, my dad was clearing out his loft, and he found a tin of beans that dated back to shortly after WWII, he opened the tin and they looked perfect, good enough to eat.
He didn't eat them though lol, not worth the risk!

Canned goods are fine and even fresh meat to a certain extent. I've cooked beef quite a bit past it's best by date.
Chicken on the other hand I am never sure about. Even close to the expiry date and it starts to smell.....

Some things are safe to eat after a time, and tins are supoosed to be ok as long as there is no corrosion evident inside the tin of course.
In the days of real austerity in this country you would be surprised at what people would eat and get away with it.
