As long as he has not turned the engine on you should be okay. otherwise it could be ££££££. One of our works mercedes cans had petrol put into it and that ran into way over a grand.

Drain out as much as you can then top it up with diesel. Should be ok.

Most of this talk of ruining pumps, seals and pipes is twoddle.

i put that amount in my Audi TDI

and ran it for a few miles till it conked out

easy fix

find the pump (and fuse) and with the engine off etc use the diesel pump to pump the fuel out

no probs and I am convinced the car ran smoother afterwards

If the van is newish, less that 10 years old then it is very likely running very high pressures in the fuel rail and injector pump. The Diesel helps to lubricate the fuel rail and pump. Petrol will not lubricate it in fact will strip off the diesel and knacker the pump and rail and possibly the injectors costing £££'s. Will not be a warranty repair either!

Do not start or drive it, if he has done so then stop it ASAP and drain the tank and refill with diesel.

It is not twaddle as some suppose. the pressures are around 1000 Bar 15,000psi if you think removing the lubricant from the pump running those pressures is OK then more fool you

Normally they are fine. If you have the chance to drain the tank before the engine is run then it is most probably worth it. Otherwise, just top the tank off with diesel a couple of times and you should be ok.

I know a friend who had a modern mini, and they took her eyes out with a £6.5k bill....
But then I know others who have done the above and been fine.

Did the same thing with an Audi v6 2.5 Quattro once - even managed a few miles driving with it before realising!! (Was a 2001 car).

Took the back seat off, pumped as much of the petrol out as we could and then stuck some Diesel in. Had to keep trying to start the engine and slowly but surely it came to life

I think Petrol in a diesel is not as bad as diesel in a petrol (might be wrong way around??) - have heard people say 'I'm sure it runs better since the mistake' lol

I've always been told the other way round due to knackering pumps/injectors etc.

i put half a tank of diesel in my old tvr once. topped it up with super unleaded and it was ok...

Yes that is the wrong way round

A bit of diesel in petrol should not be a problem. But as said above the diesel does lubricate things. Your choice - take a chance and you might be OK but modern fuel pumps are v pricey. £30 quid's worth (1/3rd of a tank?) of petrol is a bit much to take a chance IMHO.

Just don't run it.

Just get the fuel drained out then fill it full of diesel. Always wise to fit a new fuel filter too as they hold a litre or so.

Mates girlfriend did it last week.

But she did a very stupid thing, she put £20 then realised, so then filled the remainder of the tank with diesel...so instead of wasting £20 of fuel, she wasted £60......plus the recovery fee and labour when it concked out, and charges to drain/refil it.

BTW: becase it may run, doesn't mean its ok. I've seen a Merc ML CDi be filled with petrol, driven 200miles....then it conked out at the end of the journey.....with a knackered pump, injectors and melted pistons! (injectors were damaged, which in turn caused misfueling which in turn overheats the pistons).

Even if you realise your mistake before switching the engine on it can still be pricey if you take it to the stealers. £230 to drain the tank and replace the fuel filter

heres mine

notice the battery -- that was to start and stop the fuel pump

and the hose to containers to collect the petrol -- flushed through with several litres of diesel once all the petrol was out,

flushed through the fuel filter as well

(and I resused the petrol in my lawnmowers and kit car)

then filled to the brim with super diesel

easy job

It would seriously damage the fuel system and the engine would be knocking itself into submission.
