Hsitory of the space shuttle in pictures
Like the decomissioning of Concorde this does indeed seem a retrograde step.

30% chance of "Go" due to weather. T-9 Hold is the final go/no go call I think.
Much as the American's like to use the word "Awesome" for things that aren't, in this case I think the word does apply.
Good luck to the crew of STS-135!

Huh? NASA Launch blog is saying the weather is observed as "Go" at present. We are in the T-9 hold, so perhaps another poll will be taken before coming out of the hold.

Watching it on CNN and they are worried about one particular area of cloud that could mess up the launch. Things are still progressing for launch but if it stays like it is then it's a "No go".

i was watching an interview with someone from Nasa earlier, they were asked if it was a step backwards. He answered that it was 7 years after the Apollo missions before the Shuttle was used so its no different to how things have worked out in the past
Im sure there will still be future re-usable space craft

Just been lucky enough to witness the last launch of the shuttle while on my hols in FL. Arrived at 6.00am to stake out our spot in Titusville, across the Indian River frome Cape Canaveral.
Plenty of pre launch drama, such as a bomb scare/suspected package which was attended by the local bomb squad. Regualar low level flights by the NASA Huey, and high passes by F16 keeping an eye on weather conditions.
