Cool I really didn't know what to title this thread.

http://news.sky.com/home/world-news/article/16038404

Firstly this poor woman has lost a kid due to an accident.
Secondly, she is black and was prosecuted and found guilty by an all white jury in Georgia.
Thirdly she got a longer sentance than the vehicle driver, who was drinking, on painkillers and blind in one eye with a previous conviction. (You couldn't make it up could you?)

But the part of the story that really worried me was the name of the pressure group who commented on the case.

"Pedestrians Educating Drivers on Safety" or Pedos for short

Wow, only in America.

I get the jaywalking but getting more than the driver is just ludicrous.

Sounds fair enough to me! Pedestrians shouldn't walk where cars go, easy! Would you go to a jungle and complain that a tiger ate you?

She has to accept some responsibility for the jaywalking offence but the prosecution went way over the top. Being in that part of the States she had everything stacked against her as well of course.

The truck driver should have been hammered for it too.

Pedestrians in this country are getting out of hand in the way that they either walk along the road instead of perfectly clear pavements provided for their safety and also crossing the road without looking first-often with their back to the traffic!

What happened to the Green Cross Code I wonder!

If you read the article you'll see he already was 'hammered'

This is pretty shocking stuff but you have to ask had the guy not been drunk, visually impaired and on pain killers would he have stopped in time or avoided the collision all together? Ultimately the safety of her children is her responsibility but I'm pretty sure loosing her child would have been punishment enough.

Jaywalking is taken seriously in the states though, I had my backside handed to me by a cop in New York years ago for just crossing the road, he backed off when he realised I was a tourist.

So, your happily driving along the road. Some kid runs out in front of you, you have no time to brake or swerve. You hit the kid and they die from their injuries.

As a driver are you to blame? No.
As a driver, should you be arrested over it? No
As a driver, should you go to court over it? No
As a driver, should you go to prison over it? No

Run out into the road and get killed, then sorry but it's your fault. natural selection.

EDIT
Just read the article properly. Hit and run. yeah the driver deserves to go to jail.

So you are ignoring the drink driving, blind in one eye and he has a history of it?
