Planning to head across to Porthcawl with the family to play in waves this weekend, having never been there before any hints, tips places to go or avoid?

Avoid Trecco bay, I always preferred Rest bay. Its ok if you don`t expect too much and don`take it too seriously. I used to live about an hour away and we referred to it as "the last resort"

Keep on driving past Porthcawl to either The Gower or on to Pembroke where you will find beautiful clean beaches with lovely clear water. Porthcawl is a tip though OK for surfing at Rest Bay.

I normally head down to Devon, but fancied a day trip (Devon's too far in a day, 3 a half hrs each way) so thought S Wales and Porthcawl would be worth a look. (c 2hrs each way). Heading to the Gower is c.3 hrs hence my reluctance to travel a little further.
Any other southerly options?

Southerndown is nicest near Porthcawl.
Alternatively, drive on to the Gower and go to Llangennith beach. PJ's surf shop in the village will have all beach/surf related gear, good pub (white hart) and although you need to pay to get into the caravan park/beach area at the bottom of the hill it's worth it. Reynoldston /tiger's Head pub is nice place to eat on the way home too.
Alternatively, 3 cliffs bay on the south side of the gower or further west into Pembroke (another hour on) - Broadhaven North/South, Newgale or Whitesands bay outside St davids are all good places.

Ogmore by Sea or Southerndown are not touristic at all, J35 M4, then pick up the Porthcawl signs then off the A48 at the Ewenny/Bridgend Roundabout. Chilled out, good surfing and no dog turds like Porthcawl . Remember Porthcawl is called "Hiya Butt Bay" by us locals.
Your currently in the traditional "miners fortnight holidays", last week of July, 1st week of August. Because they all know each other all you hear is "Hiya but".
Gower or out toward St Davids, off there myself on Tuesday.

Went yesterday to............. Southerndown / Dunraven bay, a lovely small beach, infact so nice you could have been in England ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Unfortunately no waves until high tide, when it picked up a bit. Took a drive up to Porthcawl, difficult to see the beaches as the tide was in, but Rest Bay looked fine, Trecco and the one by Coney looked like it could have do tide to come in further and a small tsunami to give it along overdue clean up!

Will head up to the Gower at some point, just delighted to have found a decent Atlantic facing beach 2 hrs from home.
