Is this an appropriate prison sentence?

Is this an appropriate prison sentence?
A Muslim extremist who posted a call for attacks on MPs who supported the Iraq war on a radical website, along with where to buy a knife, has been jailed for 12 years.

In a nutshell , yes, it's about time this country started being hard on these idiots.
My only concern is they will serve their sentence in the UK at cost to us whreas I think they should be deported immediately to their native country whether they like it or not.

12 years for saying you are going to do something or urging others does seem fairly harsh but it sends a clear message to extremists that we now don't **** about when it comes to stuff like that. People get much, much less for actually killing someone when driving a car drunk which I think is much worse.

If person(s) B was your wife or kid would you think it was harsh?

People say a lot of stuff Tony, for many reasons but never actually act on it, my point was that this saying he was going to kill somebody seems to be being penalised more harshly than actually killing someone, not saying they are wrong but there does seem to be some big anomalies in our Judicial system.

What anomalies? It's quite possible to kill someone by accidient, or otherwise unintentionally. It's all about intent.
The intent was there for this guy.

Yes, but to be honest Tony how many people say they could "murder" someone in jest, how many people post bollocks on here (me included) that they would never do, ok, this is a little more serious but it is still not actual crime until they do it, this isn't "Vanilla Sky" where we can predict what people will actually do, whereas I would be more concerned with someone who drinks and drives then actually kills someone than someone who talks about it and might, regardless of ethnic origin.

sounds like "thought crime" to me
the **** sounds like a cvnt, -- 12 years?, if being a cvnt's a crime, most posters on scoobynet would be inside

What he actually did was asked other people to kill, and gave them instructions.
He was soliciting murder.

12 years sounds about right.
But then where does this sit with freedom of speech? You're free to speak*
*as long as you conform.
Now if he had said kill the gingers...

It's not so much that he just blurted out a random online "they all deserve to die", he systematically and repeatedly posted detailed instructions on exactly how and where they could most easily be targeted, gave their names, addresses etc.
Short of offering a cash reward, there wasn't much more he could have done to entice people to murder them.

Didn't say how old he was? Probably some crazy brainwashed kid but he had to be sent down of course.
12 years? Makes no odds really as I expect he will feel the same when he comes out in 6 years or whatever.
The real culprits are the folk that twisted his mind.

True but you need to realise the type of people we are dealing with here, religious fanatics who hate us (although they live here in houses we built and use our NHS and claim our benefits ) still have an axe to grind against us with troubles abroad etc.

This is what makes me laugh. These idiots purport to be on some Jihadist mission but yet are quite happy to exploit the advantages of the freedom and hopsitality of those they wish to harm. Okay in this case he was targetting MPs who aren't flavour of the month but you get the point. Jihad from what I understand can only be taken against those that take up arms against you. Much of the problem stems from newly converted followers whose intentions are dubious.

Not even the most ardent libertarian would argue that freedom of speech includes freedom to solicit murder, since it is clearly jeopardising the security of others.

How would that be relevant unless you believe that the British state was at war with Muslims, just MP's don't count as they don't physically wield weapons?
