Default Which spanners?

My spanners are a cheap **** out of a set my mum and Dad bought me years ago(missing all the decent sizes too) and after just burning my fingers off my cat due to my spanner slipping, i want a new set.

Either these
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-Hi-To...668353&sr=8-12

or these
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-68234...3668353&sr=8-1

I personally don't know what the difference is! You decide?

I bought a set from halfords spanners and sockets and been more than happy with them abit more expensive but you get lifetime guarantee with them so worth the extra imo

Not to put to finer point on iot aren't they the same, just presented differently - yes i know one set has a 6mm and the other an 18mm but they look like the same spanners

Price seems good

As above, I'd no longer buy Draper, sems to have been bought out by the Far East and most of their stuff is cheap.

Halfords are guranteed for life, and a good price.

AFAIK it's only the Halfords professional kit that gets the life guarantee. I've been using the Halfords Professional stuff for a few years now with zero failures and can't fault it TBH, I'm not exactly easy going on them either.

Halfords Professional stuff is Draper Expert, the Draper Expert range seem to be cheaper though via Amazon than the Hafords range.

As as i said, I don't know the difference between to above spanner sets which is why I wanted advice on which set.

This is the Halfords Professional version of the Draper Expert Kit.
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...Id_165572#dtab
Quite a price difference for technically the same kit!

I've just bought a set of combined open end and ring. All sizes from 24mm to 6mm Halfords professional range £64. Nice shiny spanners.

Halfords pro are good as are King Dick and of course Snap On. You will get what you pay for with tools.

Halfrauds professional stuff is good and I would recommend them. I've had a set for over 15 years and the only failure I had was a 19mm socket. It was replaced without question!
I also have a lot of Teng stuff which is also good. Its not too expensive either!

Avoid that Draper 5hite like the plague unless you want burnt/scraped knuckles again

Britool are ok for cheap spanners but believe they've been bought by draper now too?

You won't go far wrong with Halfords pro range. I've had their ratchet spanners for years and they have been great.

My normal spanners are Facom 440 ones, thought I'd try them as they're a bit different ie they have deep ring ends and an offset head and have come in handy in a couple of awkward situations.

Can't say that's ever happened to me TBH and I tend to pull my plugs quite often.

This is the tool set I've got.

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...k&iozone=PLPz1

and also this spanner set.

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165572

I've seen me virtually hanging off of these tools on the end of breaker bars and still haven't had any of them bend or break.

I've also got this cheapo tool set also from Halfords
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165572

I was going to use for trackdays etc (no point in buying dear incase some theiving **** nicks it) and the quality of this way below the professional gear.

Most of my tools are Halfords Professional.. I've managed to break a few bits over the years, but replaceemnts are easy to sort.

I get a lot of use from my halfords ratchet spanners.. They are often on offer at about £40

I've got both some snap on ,draper and halfords pro kit and imho the halfords is considerably higher quality.
If I had the cash I would buy this http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...k&iozone=PDPz1 plus a set of the ratchet spanners on offer at 40 notes atm plus a set of 6 sided impact sockets for rusted/stubbon nuts/bolts
cheers richie

All sockets seem to be double Hex though

pretty sure all the 1/4 are single hex-the double hex have deeper teeth than most sockets so do drive on the flats so ok on a decent grade nut/bolt, but admittedly not as good as a single hex impact set for really stubborn stuff .
does help having a trade card tho as I get around a third to half off tools and stupid cheap prices on filters, wiper blades, bulbs etc.
cheers richie

do some research on bahco tools , best socket and spanner set ive ever bought the sockets are accross flats as std , and the spanners are almost indestructable . 19mm on a siezed nut with a 22 for leverage still didn't break . the 1/2 sockets will undo anything on a car , 2ft long breaker bar on them will take the head off 17mm bolts
this is what i have ebay number 130528525852

People wax about Snap On but I am not convinced a Snap On spanner is significantly better than a Halfords one! It's just a spanner FFS!

If you gave them to a blind mechanic I bet he would never know the difference.

Things like torque wrenches I agree you get what you pay for, but for stuff like spanners so long as it is within tolerance and made of steel of adequate quality I don't see the point of high end 'brand' names.

It's getting a bit like fashion labels. A £3 Tesco T-shirt does the same job as a £30 Superdry one.

My work toolbox is full with snap-on, mac-tools, and halfords proffessional. Tbh snap-on cover the more specialised side of things while mac and halfords cover the lot and are made by stanley tools in the same foundry, id recommend using halfords proffessional because the quality is excellent and if you break it they replace it without quibble .

My toolbox at work is mainly Snap on stuff...

They are good, and i have had much of the spanners and sockets for 15 yrs+,they still look like new and they get used daily..

That said, many other tool companies are good. Personally i like Facom and Kokem stuff too,Facom ratchets in paticular are very good and i never use my Snap on ratchets at all. I must have a dozen of them in various sizes..

Halfords Pro stuff is more than adequate,i have some of the ratchet spanners. The 10mm and 13mm are broken, but they have been used a lot!

I agree. I think you get to a certain standard of manufacture ie. Halfords advanced and that is enough for me!

I bought a huge set from COSTCO by Crescent which included 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 rachets, ratchet spanners and more sockets that you could need for £79. The cheapset set of the same make was £99 via e-bay, Amazon etc on the web.

IMO The only reason most mechanics swear by Snap-On or Facom is because they can buy the stuff on tick

Are you sure

I have both in my tool kit and they look completely different, my personal preference is for the Halfords Pro stuff mainly because I've not broken anything from them yet

As far as sockets go though, I'm still usin the Teng sets I bought two decades ago

I agree with that, Draper expert and Halfords pro stuff don't look the same at all, comparing a 21mm spanner, the Halfords one is much longer, heavier and shinier Plus if it breaks you just walk in the shop and get a replacement.

I think a lot of mechanics buy Snap-on because of the convenience, the van turns up at there work etc and the fact they get interest free credit.
