revenue to treasury down by 1bn due to higher prices - methinks someone got their sums wrong and also just what the public can and will stomach!

I reckon there is another oil price crash on it's way anytime soon.
Get your cheap scoobies whilst you can! In 6 months, it will only cost £10 to fill the tank.

Well, I still drive the little Sports Car - just for the hell of it ........
But I'm so glad I don't own a gas guzzler anymore - the massive hit on residual values is horrific ...... my 50 mpg transport is rock solid on resale. I'm such a clever cookie

that curve was an interesting read. it says about 70% is the maximum you can tax before it becomes a waste of time taxing at all.
Well, between income tax and VAT, we're up to OVER 60% of taxation. I get less than half my wages that IVE earned. If tax does keep going up, just like the curve says, it wont be worth me working coz basically my wages arent mine anymore.

Oh they already have. Cameron was going on about it yesterday in some political interview.
'We have helped by reducing the fuel duty. We do understand what is happening.'
Yeah, of course you do.

I'm sure he actually does understand, but where does the cash shortfall come from if he panders to the demands of performance car owners? I just don't think people really have a grip of how over-spent the Western world is at the moment. Retrenchment is going to come as a hard knock for many it would seem.

It's not just performance cars though Tel, everyone is cutting back on miles driven. Also, more and more people are looking to increase their MPG. The whole market is consuming less fuel and thus paying less tax.
If fuel tax were reduced, everyone could afford to use more fuel, more tax would be generated.
Same as smoking, they've ramped the tax up on cigs and now more and more people are giving up... less tax revenue.

Yep, understand your point, Bob, and it does all come back to Leffer curve analysis, as per the above link. Worth reading. Very difficult to balance the demands of reducing the consumption of fossil fuels (and people smoking for that matter) with the issue of finding the tax revenue from somewhere else.
Ultimately, the Government will have to come up with alternatives, and they will. Nobody likes taxes, but everyone wants the services etc that they provide. People ARE smoking less and people ARE buying more efficient cars; in the end the pricing will do the talking. But in my opinion, reducing taxation so that people can continue their lifestyles in the manner to which they have become accustomed is simply NOT the answer.

I drive about 40k miles a year & can say with certainty that most people are driving slower these days = more mpg ... I still maintain 85 clicks on the m/way & now find myself flying past people who must be doing way below 70mph ...

I've cut my fuel use by way more than 15%
I no longer drive to work I ride, 10-15mpg better on the fuel consumption & at least 40% off my journey times
Downside is the bike has no roof

Used to take my MK2 out every weekend to shows etc during the Summer months. This year, The thing only went out 3 times due to the high fuel prices (& 13mpg) So, a lot less money going to HMRC from me. Looks like being the same for the foreseeable future.............

I sold my Subaru last month after 8 years of owning one mostly due to the fuel costs and partly to do with the abysmal state of the roads around here. I now have a little 306 which runs on diesel, which including savings on insurance means I save £260 a month in running costs.
We have also cut down on family outings, which in turn means less money spent and less revenue for the treasury.

In some ways it is unbelievable the populace does not revolt at this level of taxation....we just seem to passively accept it.
