Whose death has moved you, other than family?
Has someone died that you don't know particularly moved you, in a deeper way than you expected?
For me there are four people that I don't know at all really that have really moved me...
Ayrton Senna - when he died I was totally shocked, the strange thing I never really liked him as a driver. Looking back it was maybe that he drove like he was immortal and that sudden shock of mortality...
John Martyn - I met John a couple of times but didn't really know him - but his music and gigs around Edinburgh were the soundtrack of my life from 18-30 - very formative years - a tragic figure in life and death with amazing music
Colin McRae - the reason I got in a Subaru, another decade defined by the influence of someone I never knew. I had the chance to spend the day with him once as a corporate guest of some event at IBM as the customer dropped out. I always regret not going - but there again - never meet your heroes.
Steve Jobs - no idea why really, maybe as an iconic leader of the social media revolution which has been defining in my current phase of life
So who have you been touched by in death?

John Lennon and John Bonham.
Lennon as I thought he was a great musician.
Bonham because I will now never see Led Zeppelin perform live again.
My best mate Rick who died on 17th September. He was supposed to have been coming out here with me this visit, having been given his retirement on 1st Septemeber off the works after 44 years' service.
I miss him incredibly, and never an hour goes by that I don't think, "Rick would have enjoyed that", or "If Rick were here......." etc.
RIP Rick.

Embarrassed as i am about it now, i was moved by Diana's funeral, i thought it was extremely touching, especially Elton's piano piece.
But her death, or that of anyone else not related to me? Nah.

Senna, seeing people jump out the twin towers. And yes losing my pet did gut me more so than others I have lost, can't help that.

Weirdly, Corey Haim out of the Lost Boys, same age as me and was in one of my favourite films. John Peel, Tommy Vance, John Peel, can remember hearing about Elvis dying ont he radio aged about six, was in the car with my mum and dad.
Micheal Jackson, hmm, big deal, wasn't surprised, not bothered, Ditto Amy Winehouse, sad but had a feeling of inevitability.
Bubba Smith (Hightower), sad when people from your childhood start dying, Gary Coleman (What you Talkin bout Willis) and even more so Dana Plato the big sister from Diff'rnt Strokes dying as I had a massive crush on her as a 10 year old.
Ryan Dunn was a shock.

I can't believe noones mentioned Richard Burns yet!
Most of the people mentioned here have died quickly in accidents, but to watch someone die slowly of a painful and debilitating illness was very difficult to deal with.
He was fast man, so fukin fast...
Astraboy.

Though I was a big fan, John Peels death didn't move me till they played 'Teenage Kick' by the Undertones on the radio. That caused a bit of a lump in my throat.
I had the great fortune to meet Senna a couple of times and found him a warm, friendly chap, totally different to his driving persona.
Totally agree about Richard Burns. Another top bloke taken far too soon.

Michael Hutchence and more recently Gary Moore.
I can't watch/ read an article about fallen soldiers without getting teary-eyed (have lots of family in the armed forces).

I will probably get flamed for this but one death that moved me, although not a person in the public light was Grant (Tam) especially as I like some others had been communicating with him not long before it happened.
It made me realise how vunerable we all are as human beings..
