Default RBS: Inside the Bank That Ran Out of Money

This was quite an entertaining telling of the story of RBS's rise and fall.

Was on at 21:00 tonight on BBC1 in Scotland and will be repeated on BBC2 on Saturday at 19:45.

But for all you Englanders, here's the iPlayer link in case you're interested: it should be up soon. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode..._Out_of_Money/

The shareholder meetings towards the end are painful.

That is a brilliant documentary.

It makes Goodwin look like a megalomaniac just as described by the journalist.

And indeed when they are trying to explain away the Tier 1 Core Capital ratio it is simply off the embarrassment scale.

Ironically without ABN they probably would be one of the strongest and best positioned banks in the world. "Due Diligence Light" - Idiots

Some good news, Sir Fred Goodwin is now just Fred Goodwin.

Shame he still gets his £650k pension from RBS

It's insane.

I suspect he is a highly capable leader just has some massive character flaw.

Just reading about all his mates in the 'business world' defending him and saying he shouldn't have had his knighthood stripped..... typical of these types.

I'm not sure 'services to banking' ever deserved a knighthood in the first place

Hindsight is a wonderful thing...

...in 2005 it all looked pretty good.

Goodwin had led the most successful corporate merger in the UK, RBS had gone from being a tiny Scottish bank to one of the largest banks in the world.

It was only after the knighthood that he completely lost the plot!!!

Sounds like he was totally dominant over the RBS board and surrounded by yes men/women. In that position a man can start to think he is infallible.

I hope at some point he writes a book about it. It would be interesting, sort of like Albert Speers autobiography. ....an endless self-serving narrative but punctuated by fascinating observations and insights.

Can't understand how he could have been considered to be worth a knighthood anyway!

There are plenty of knighthoods given as long service awards in the civil service - are these any more deserving - I doubt it!

if he had got his gong (i would abolish them all btw) for charady work, or other work outside business, then I would see this as petty and vindictive

but he got it for "Services to Banking", I mean, imagine if he had done a dis-service to banking, we really would be in the **** then

He was told this week that he will never be allowed to take a senior position in banking again by the FSA.

Not that anyone would hire him of course.

I see that Sir Tom Mckillop as being even more responsible as he was Goodwins boss, even though he had no qualifications or experience in banking, which was glaringly obvious.

Will he also lose his knighthood?

Who next? Sir Victor Blank who royally f***ed up Lloyds by agreeing to buy HBoS?
