Default Met clamping down on uninsured drivers...

So in the eyes of SN is this victimising small time offenders, and wasting police time, or a worth while exercise.

Twitter reports 160+ cars so far seized and over 10 arrests made.

IMO its a good thing, and I wish they could do it all day long at pinch points in the roads.

Fine them to the max. Uninsured drivers cause no end of misery. Zero sympathy.

Agreed, and squish their cars and any car they are permitted to drive!

I would rather they seize any uninsured car on site and then sell it on for spares.
At least we actually get some money out of the scambags rather than them just not paying the fines.

Driving while uninsured has always been a serious offence and I belive that it should remain so and that the penalties are very severe.

Confiscation and destruction of cars as well as a significant fine and penalty points should make them think twice.

Not a bad idea, or auction off the cars if they are worth it.

Auction off cars and let local cash strapped councils keep the money, the offenders should then have their fingers removed by a pair of bolt cutters to stop them ever gripping a steering wheel again.

I drove past a police station in Ashton Under Lyne in Manchester last week and there is a E90 BMW M3 - A white one with big wheels on on ramps with a sign saying "seized for no insurance and insurance. It's been on display as a deterrant

Further research show it was seized from a drug dealer - M3

Long overdue, I think. While they're at it they can do them for their illegal exhausts, number plates and tints.

They ought to be fined for being stickered up and dump-valved, an'all.

lol no chance - would be seen as politically incorrect to assume any of the residents there dont have any car insuranace or indeed use the family driving liscence.

Police also ought to attend whenever there is an crash, this should hopefully stop those who deliberately crash into people in order to claim insurance, thereby increasing the premium for everyone.

Here. they do. If you crash or have even the slightest accident you are not allowed to move anything even if it is causing chaos, then the police turn up and take photos and statements before anything is moved. Can be a pain in the **** for minor bumps and so on but I suppose it stops alot of fraud and so on.

Good. Any insured driver who is caught should get an automatic driving ban as well

If they targeted Bradford and confiscated all uninsured vehicles they could wipe the national debt with the proceeds

As much as its a problem in cities and towns they should really tackle the countryside too. Lost count of the amount of taxless vehicles, uninsured drivers and just plan old drunks behind the wheel i've encountered living in the sticks.

That didn't stop the scammers who caught my colleague out a few years ago. The police attended, but kept no record long-term as no one was reported injured at the time. The two people in the car became three (or maybe four) when the insurance claim arrived.

And then they would drive both uninsured and without a license.

Personally i have a lot of sympathy for young people. In some parts of the country you need a car to get to work, yet premiums are ridiculously high. Stupidly so for young people.

Last year the NHS spent £8 million treating whiplash. Insurance claims topped £2 billion. That to me is fraud. Its the scumbag legal system that should be in prison, not uninsured drivers.

Totally agree with it. What about foreign cars with no road tax?

Good idea as uninsured drivers give insurance companies all the excuse they need to load up everyone's premium again and again.
