But Android is open source, how was he ever going to 'destroy' something that is developed as such. The only way to compete would be to make iOS available to all too but as we know that's never going to happen as Apple is very much a closed shop.

Jobs was clearly delusional in the latter stages of his illness.

Makes me like the guy and the company he represents less and less.

From that article it wasn't the competition he didn't like, it was the deceit of Google and the blatant copying.

Mr Mueller was also critical of Eric Schmidt's dual role at the time: "The fact that Eric Schmidt stayed on Apple's board while he was preparing an iOS clone was an inexcusable betrayal of Steve Jobs' trust."

Mr Schmidt resigned from the Apple board in August 2009. He was later quoted by Bloomberg as saying: "I was on the board until I couldn't stay on the board anymore."
I think that is the crux of it, Apple had a thief in house who was party to all the important decisions at board level. Conflict of interest, much I think it says a lot about Google more than it does about Jobs.

The guy was on the board of Apple all the way through iOS development and then suddenly resigns off the board as Google announce Android.

Conflict of interest at best; betrayal and industrial theft at worst.

Proof of pudding...

Apple Market cap is more than twice that of Google even though Android has twice the market.

I don't care either way but it makes Jobs sound like a nutjob hell bent on world domination, directors will always move, patents will always be infringed and I will bet Apple arent above a bit of Skullduggery.

As for until his final breath, he got that wish.

It would be a newsflash - only apple users couldn't view it.

newsflash is not Adobe Flash (which I'm guessing you are trying to refer to) and I can view Adobe Flash perfectly well in OS X on my Apple Mac

Yep really dumb thing to say on record . I bet many a CEO has said equal or worse about a competitor, just make sure its behind closed doors!

Steve's quote from the book:

"I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong," Jobs said. "I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this."

Not sure if that is in the BBC article or not. Can't blame him really, Schmidt sat there and knowingly gathered info which he took to Google for Andriod. Yes this no doubt happens elsewhere. Let us imagine this was someone as Microsoft who toddled off to Google, do you think Steve Ballmer's reaction would be any less, actually he'd probably do another office chair throwing scene.

Oh you Apple fan boys make me laugh.
I really couldn't care less. I just thought it was an interesting article and not a trait usually displayed by Mr Jobs.
All those jumping to his defense really, really need to lighten up.
It plastic and wires for f&ck sake!

these operating system wars are ridiculous. I don't really see how else a touch screen device can work, they are all going to look similar because the people that use them all have the same fingers.

What about the latest IOS5 which has blatantly copied android for its pull down menu, and notifications that appear up at the top of the screen.

And what about the original LG touch screen which had a menu which Apples original iphone looked strangely familiar too...?

The only thing i think apple are doing right is the galaxy tablet thing....But even then how different can a tablet look?

You can side with some dodgy Taiwanese/Korean copycats if you like, I'll stick with the innovators that stopped us being German. Shame on you for shunning your allies to save a few quid.

Android, love it or hate it is catching up and overtaking Apple now, one phone and a proprietary O/S at premium price vs a cast of several all jockeying for position and an open source OS, even the brand loyalty is going now that the competition are now catching and improving, I really dont think things look good for Apple. I am no fanboy and the 4GS is doing well but the number of people I know realising there are options is astounding.

It's simply history repeating itself, Android is the new "Windows" where the OS is widely adopted by different hardware vendors. Look at the Windows PC vs Mac market share, inevitably the phone market will mirror this.

Still not going to stop Android phones from being the most popular and gaining the majority of the phone market share, like Windows do now in the PC market.

The thing is though, Android will win by default as there are how many phones with the OS on? same with Mac OS and Windows. Mac's are Mac's. It's not like you can only get a windows PC from a Microsoft shop.......

If you were to compare iPhone 4 to say, Galaxy S which one has more?

Iphone 3Gs to HTC Hero?

MacBook Pro to top of the range Sony laptop?

its iphone.

its Macbook Pro (since you are only comparing to the top of the range Sony model, not their entire product line.)

Exactly this. Both platforms will survive and do rather nicely I'm sure.
