I received an email today from Honister Slate Mine in the Lakes - if anyone has ever been then there's a documentary on BBC4 Sunday 9pm....
Please be aware that you can see a new television documentary about Honister Slate Mine and its late owner Mark Weir this Sunday at 9pm on BBC Four.
Called Tales From The National Parks, it sheds fresh light on Mark's last few months of life
Mark saved Honister Slate Mine from extinction in 1997 and was being shadowed by a BBC film crew right up until his helicopter crashed on the night of March 8th.
The hour-long documentary concerns his struggles to build the Northern hemisphere's highest, fastest and longest zip wire at the Honister site, as well as introducing the award-winning Via Ferrata experience.
Honister remains open for business and determined to carry on his legacy with help from his partner Jan, brother Joe and mum Celia.
The last time I went I had a long chat with Mark as he was trying to get permission for the zip wire - lovely chap and very determined to see it through.
Can't wait to have a go sometime, when my bollox are bigger.....

In the lake district if there is any conflict between the countryside and it's development.......the countryside wins.

How very shorted sighted.
That would have been a massive boost for the local economy - I know loads of people who would have gone there.
No doubt the powers that be will soon be complaining about the lack of tourist going to the Lakes...

Well, very sad ending.
Mark was certainly a bloody minded, fiery individual!
Perhaps he didn't do things by the book, but he has to be admired.
It's understandable that the powers that be wanted to keep the tranquility of the area as is, but that excellent rant by the councillor at the end summed it up perfectly!
It is a beautiful place, but would that zip wire (and indeed the Ferrata) really have desecrated it...?

I watched this and was gutted that the zip wire didn't get the go head.
I lol'd at the part where he rescued the sheep. Quiet a sad end to his life.
I would of liked to have seen him and his response at the hearing..
